The Houthi Strikes on Saudi Arabia: The Deadliest Attack in a Decade, and What Comes Next
On Saturday, 10 October 2026, Riyadh's international airport was attacked for the third time in a week. Saudi authorities said at least 12 people were killed and more than 300 wounded, and Reuters called it the deadliest attack in the kingdom in more than a decade. Your framing is right on the headline fact: this level of harm to Saudi civilians has not been seen for years.
What happened
The attack on King Khalid International Airport followed two earlier strikes that week. Attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday on King Khalid and Abha International Airport left three dead and 36 wounded, and Thursday's strikes killed three Saudis, including a pilot. A Saudi commercial plane parked on the tarmac was heavily damaged.
The victims of Saturday's attack came from many countries. The dead included four Saudis, two Bangladeshis, and one each from the US, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Sudan and Egypt. All flights were diverted from the airport, which serves a city of 8 million, and Western governments told citizens to avoid the area.
Why the Houthis say they are doing it
A Houthi military spokesman called it "airport-for-airport," a response to Saudi attacks on Sanaa International Airport and the airport in Hodeidah, with the aim of imposing a blockade on all Saudi airports. This is a campaign the Houthis launched this summer, and they have warned of a long conflict. The Washington Post reports it is unfolding amid a wider Iran war, with the Houthis also striking Saudi oil infrastructure.
Not new, but far more deadly
Saudi Arabia is no stranger to Houthi fire. Abha airport, for example, was attacked in 2019, 2020 and 2021, and again by drones on 13 July 2026. What has changed is scale and target: a major international airport in the capital, with mass casualties, repeated within days.
Reactions and risks
The Saudi-led coalition called the attack a "full-fledged war crime" and promised a decisive response. The UN envoy for Yemen called it "a grave escalation." President Trump denounced the attack as "terrible" and said the US is evaluating whether to join Saudi Arabia's offensive on the Houthis. Pakistan, India and Canada also condemned it.
The risks are clear. Further retaliation could widen the war, hit oil infrastructure and global energy prices, disrupt air travel, and endanger the millions of foreign workers and pilgrims in the kingdom, including Africans.
Why this matters for Africa and West Africa
My analysis, not sourced: Gulf instability can raise fuel prices across import-dependent West African economies, threaten Red Sea shipping routes that carry African trade, and put at risk the many Nigerians, Ghanaians and other Africans who work in or travel to Saudi Arabia. Two of the dead were from Sudan and Egypt.
