What Happened: German Court Orders Former Spy Chief Held After Espionage Arrest
On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, German authorities arrested a former aide of August Hanning, the ex-president of Germany's foreign intelligence service, the BND. The aide is identified only as Manfred D., in line with German privacy rules. He is accused of aiding and abetting attempted treason and treasonous espionage and is already in pretrial detention. On Wednesday, a judge issued an arrest warrant for Hanning and ordered him held in pretrial detention.
The alleged arrangement
According to federal prosecutors, the two men agreed in 2010 that Manfred D. would continuously provide Hanning, who had left office five years earlier, with valuable foreign intelligence information in exchange for payment. Manfred D. served as chief of staff for several later BND presidents from 2012 until 2026. AFP reports that he is suspected of selling around 2,000 secret files to his former boss, who used them for his consulting work.
Prosecutors say Hanning allegedly used the information to his financial advantage in his private consulting work, and may have had access to material meant only for use inside the BND, including classified documents for executive intelligence briefings. They add that it has not yet been possible to determine whether the report reached its intended recipient.
The wider assessment
The Washington Post reports that Hanning is accused of selling state secrets to at least one foreign state, in what could be the worst security breach at the agency since the end of the Cold War. That judgment is the newspapers, not a finding by prosecutors or the court.
The defense
Hanning's attorney, Leon Kruse, told AFP his client is being "unjustly prosecuted" and denies the most serious allegations.
A separate matter
Hanning is also under investigation by Hamburg prosecutors in a different case, over the alleged kidnapping of Christina Block's children. He is not a defendant in the ongoing trial of Block herself, and he has rejected the allegations through his lawyer. Nothing in the reports reviewed links that case to the espionage allegations, so I would keep the two clearly apart in print.
What remains unclear
The reports do not say which foreign state or states were the alleged recipients. Detention is a pretrial measure, not a conviction, and both men remain presumed innocent.
