Kojo Bamba’s election will hurt NPP’s appeal to the middle class – Solomon Owusu
National Communications Director of the United Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its election of Kojo Fosu Boadu, popularly known as Kojo Bamba, as the party’s First National Vice Chairman.
Kojo Bamba, a former leader of the pro-NPP Delta Force group, was elected First National Vice Chairman at the party’s National Delegates Conference held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on October 3.
He secured 3,116 votes to emerge ahead of Henry Nana Boakye, who polled 3,061 votes, and Nana Akomea, who obtained 2,987 votes.
Speaking on Accra-based TV3’s New Day programme on Wednesday, October 7, Mr Owusu said Kojo Bamba’s background would make it difficult for him to appeal to the middle-class segment of the NPP’s support base.
He described the outcome of the NPP’s national executive elections as an advantage to the UP, suggesting that the leadership choices could create an opportunity for his party to strengthen its appeal to voters.
“The NPP has been appealing to the middle class, and now if you go and elect your chairman as someone that leads a vigilante group, a radical group, a chaotic group, a group that forcibly ejects government officials or public officials that have been sent to Ashanti Regional Security Coordinators, a group that leads the invasion of court to forcibly free their members," said the UP Spokesperson.
“How does that person appeal to the government that looks at every segment of which one is the segment? Your party's main stage. Their main catchment area is the middle class, and you are going to elect someone that does not appeal to the middle class. So it advantages the United Party, and we are so happy," he added.
