I’ll sue NPP if the constitutional amendment at delegates conference goes through—Chairman Butey warns

Outgone Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Joseph Danquah Smith Butey

Outgone Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Joseph Danquah Smith Butey, has threatened to take legal action against the party if amendments approved at its recent delegates conference are incorporated into the party’s constitution.

Chairman Butey said he would not endorse the amendments, insisting that he had already made it clear on the day of the conference that the NPP could not proceed with constitutional amendments.

According to him, he is prepared to face any disciplinary action from the party, including suspension or removal from office, as he believes his position is aimed at protecting the rights of NPP members.

“I am ready to be sacked or suspended. I am fighting for the rights of the people of the party, so they should do all they want. The party people do not accept what happened on Saturday. There were no, but they said it was yes,” he said.

Chairman Butey further questioned the legitimacy of the process, arguing that the subsequent apology offered to him by some party members was an indication that they recognised that the procedure was flawed.

“If what they did on Saturday was right, they wouldn’t have called to apologise to me for what they did. Frank Davies and others came to apologise to me, but I said I wouldn’t accept this.

"I am the head of the party, and they were supposed to bring what they were going to do for me to have a look at. They did the same thing the other time, and that created a problem. This time around, too, they are doing the same thing, which is not right. They did not even let me look into what’s in the amendment until I got to the venue for the event,” he said.

He maintained that he expected the amendments not to be signed or formally added to the NPP’s constitution, warning that he would challenge the party in court if the changes were nevertheless incorporated.

The dispute centres on the constitutional amendments presented during the NPP’s delegates conference, with Chairman Butey insisting that the process did not comply with the proper procedure.
