Gov’t to replace ‘aboboyaa’ with automated waste collection vehicles – Ayariga

Minister for Local Government, Mahama Ayariga, has disclosed plans to introduce a regulated waste collection system that will use purpose-built vehicles and electronic payments to improve the management of household waste.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, September 10, the Minister said the government is considering replacing the current aboboya system with specially designed vehicles capable of automatically loading and discharging waste at designated transfer stations.

According to him, the proposed vehicles would be equipped with mechanisms to collect waste and discharge it at transfer stations, where larger trucks would transport the waste to landfill sites.

“So I’ve discussed with the Finance Minister he says he’s willing to invest in those ones when those ones come you can now replace that.”

He added that government is also working with banks and fintech companies to develop an electronic payment system under which households would pay for waste collection through platforms such as mobile money.

Under the proposed system, waste collected by operators would be weighed at transfer stations, with the amount of waste discharged determining the payment due to the operator.

The minister further announced plans to construct transfer stations within a maximum distance of five kilometres from communities as part of efforts to improve waste management in major cities.
