NDC communicator hits back at NPP over calls for Sammy Gyamfi removal

A member of the NDC Volta Regional Communications Team, Japhet Festus Gbede, has described calls by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Volta Region for the removal of Sammy Gyamfi as an act of “audacious hypocrisy.”

Mr Gbede, in a strongly worded Facebook statement, criticised the NPP's regional organisation, accusing it of being “fractured, confused, disorganised, dysfunctional, directionless and politically rudderless.”

He argued that the NPP had no moral authority to position itself as a referee on governance and accountability while facing what he described as significant internal organisational challenges.

According to Mr Gbede, 11 of the 18 constituencies in the region reportedly failed to participate in the recently held NPP Volta Regional elections amid concerns over alleged manipulation of the electoral album and the criminalisation of the polling-station electoral process.

He said the development raised questions about the party's organisational capacity and the credibility of its internal electoral processes, particularly when several constituencies could not participate in an election intended to strengthen the party's regional structures.

Mr Gbede also cited disagreements within the NPP's regional leadership, pointing to the reported decision by the Regional Secretariat to nullify appointments made by its own Regional Chairman.

“A party that cannot fix its own album, cannot organise its own elections, and cannot keep its own regional executives on the same page is demanding Sammy Gyamfi’s removal? This is audacious hypocrisy, spectacular incompetence and breathtaking self-delusion,” Mr Gbede stated.

The NDC communicator also challenged the NPP's basis for demanding the removal of Sammy Gyamfi over the reported US$1.7 billion loss associated with the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

He questioned whether the NPP had established that Mr Gyamfi personally caused the reported loss before calling for his removal.

“And who even told them Sammy Gyamfi made a loss at GoldBod?” he asked.

Mr Gbede said the NPP should first examine its own record in government before presenting itself as a moral authority on accountability and financial losses.

‘When did NPP become allergic to losses?’

Mr Gbede cited several financial issues associated with the NPP's period in government, including the GH¢26.945 billion spent on the financial-sector clean-up and GH¢1.436 billion in payments to Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited (SML), which he said the Office of the Special Prosecutor had linked to financial loss to the state.

He also referenced figures cited by Sammy Gyamfi concerning GH¢8.2 billion in losses at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and GH¢3.3 billion at Ghana Water during periods when Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin chaired their respective boards.

“And when did the NPP become so allergic to losses? Have they forgotten the GH¢26.945 billion spent on the financial-sector clean-up, the GH¢1.436 billion in SML payments, the GH¢8.2 billion ECG figure or the GH¢3.3 billion Ghana Water figure cited by Sammy Gyamfi?” he asked.

“Did they organise this same circus demanding accountability then? Challey, before preaching about losses, they should first confront their own record!” Mr Gbede added.

He urged the NPP Volta Regional leadership to focus on resolving its internal organisational challenges, strengthening cohesion and restoring confidence in its electoral processes rather than seeking to determine who should serve in the NDC administration.

Mr Gbede maintained that a party dealing with internal divisions, disputed electoral processes and disagreements among its executives could not credibly present itself as the moral authority on governance and institutional discipline.

“Before preaching about losses, accountability and institutional discipline, they should clean up their own political house first,” he stated.
