Six arrested over deadly mob attack at New Winneba
Six people have been arrested in connection with a violent mob attack at New Winneba in the Central Region that resulted in the deaths of three people and left about 15 others injured.
The suspects, identified as Kweku Kakraba, 52; Arko Thomas, 19; Samuel Tulasi, 19; Samuel Gyasi, 22; Emmanuel Okyere, 22; and Seth Osei, 22, are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
The violence occurred at about 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when a group of about 300 people from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze reportedly stormed New Winneba armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks.
The group allegedly attacked some residents and vandalised stores, houses and other properties in the township.
About 15 people, including a police officer, sustained injuries during the incident and were subsequently transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital at Winneba for medical treatment.
Three of the victims were pronounced dead by the medical officer on duty.
Weapons retrieved
In the aftermath of the violence, the police retrieved a locally manufactured single-barrel gun and an empty AAA cartridge from the scene.
Personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters, Agona Swedru Division and Mankessim Division were deployed to the area to restore calm and reinforce security.
The Inspector-General of Police also directed the deployment of a special team from the national headquarters, supported by two armoured vehicles, to strengthen operations in the area.
The police have since established six snap-check points at strategic locations and intensified both day and night patrols to prevent further violence.
Personnel from the Police Intelligence Department (PID) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have also been deployed to gather intelligence and assist with investigations.
