Election defeat can be life-saver – Former MP
Alhaji Amidu Chinnia Issahaku, former Member of Parliament(MP) for Sissala East, has described losing an election as something that can sometimes turn out to be a blessing, saying a setback may serve a purpose a person does not immediately understand.
Addressing students at the NUSS AAMUSTED Campus, the former Deputy Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources reflected on his own political experience and said losing an election did not mean he had lost everything.
“What you get is good, what you don’t get is good. So let’s appreciate one another. If I’ve lost an election to him, have I lost anything? I’ve not lost anything,” he said.
He explained that losing an opportunity or being removed from a position could sometimes protect a person from something they were not aware was ahead of them.
“Sometimes, even relieving you of a position can be for very good reasons. You may never know,” he said.
Chinnia illustrated the point with a story about a chief whose finger was bitten off by a lion. Although the chief was angry when his servant responded, “Thank God”, the missing finger later saved his life when he was taken to a shrine to be sacrificed. He was released because he was considered incomplete.
The former MP said the experience showed how what appears to be a loss can later prove to be protection.
“So sometimes when you lose opportunities, it may be for your own good. And that is why in everything, you must give thanks to God,” he said.
Chinnia also used the lesson to call for tolerance in politics, urging Ghanaians to disagree politically without turning against one another.
“Let’s tolerate each other. If this person is party A, party B, party C, you can pursue your politics without hurting your brother,” he added.
