IGP summons Volta Regional Police Commander over alleged trader harassment
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has summoned the Volta Regional Police Commander over allegations of harassment, intimidation, unnecessary delays and extortion of local traders by some police officers along the Aflao–Accra main route.
The development has also prompted the Regional Commander to summon all Divisional and District Commanders to a meeting on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, to discuss the allegations and determine appropriate measures.
The concerns emerged after a video circulated on social media alleging that police personnel stationed at the Tokor Barrier, Ativuta toll booth, Weta–Afiadenyigba junction barrier and other points towards Sogakope were demanding receipts for goods transported by local traders.
According to the allegations, traders who were unable to produce the required receipts were subjected to demands for money.
The Joint Association of Port Transport Unions (JAPTU) has subsequently appealed to senior police officers to intervene, stressing that its concerns are not necessarily about the number of checkpoints but the alleged delays, intimidation and extortion of traders.
The Ghana Police Service said the allegations were particularly concerning given ongoing efforts by institutions such as the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) to promote Ghana’s ports and transit corridors to neighbouring countries and boost trade.
“The allegations are of concern as Ghana, through institutions including the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and Ghana Shippers' Authority (GSA), is making efforts to promote its ports and transit corridors to neighbouring countries to boost trade and economic growth,” the Police Service said in a statement.
It said police personnel deployed to the affected locations had been cautioned against any form of misconduct.
The Police Service further disclosed that an inspection team was being constituted to identify and investigate personnel allegedly involved in the reported acts.
It said appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against any officers found culpable after the allegations had been substantiated.
