Poland Opens Terror Probe Into Fire At Factory Supplying Ukraine Drones ‎

Poland has launched a terrorism investigation into a fire that broke out at a factory manufacturing drone components for the Polish and Ukrainian militaries, in what authorities suspect was a deliberate act of sabotage linked to a foreign intelligence service.

What Happened
The fire struck the WB Electronics facility in Skarżysko-Kamienna, a town roughly 150 kilometres south of Warsaw, shortly after midnight on August 31, 2026.

Security sensors triggered an alarm at 12:23 a.m., prompting the site's security operator to alert local police. Firefighters spent about two hours bringing the blaze under control, and no injuries were reported.

Closed-circuit television footage reportedly captured a masked individual scaling the facility's perimeter fence shortly before the fire began. A backpack and a sweatshirt were later recovered near the scene. According to Polish prosecutors, warehouse facilities were destroyed, with damage estimated at a minimum of 15 million Polish zloty roughly €3.5 million at prevailing exchange rates.

The Terrorism Investigation
Poland's National Prosecution Office said the probe covers two strands: participation in the activities of a foreign intelligence service directed against the Republic of Poland, and a terrorist offence involving the deliberate use of a device containing flammable materials to start the fire.

The country's Internal Security Agency (ABW) is assisting police with the investigation. An agency spokesman said no further details would be released at this stage "due to their specific and confidential nature". As of this writing, no arrests have been announced.

Why WB Electronics Matters
WB Electronics is one of Poland's largest private defence manufacturers, producing loitering munitions, reconnaissance drones, fire-control systems and military communication platforms .

Its FlyEye reconnaissance drones and Warmate loitering munitions are in active use by Ukraine's armed forces against Russian positions. The company is also a key supplier to the Polish military itself, making the plant a doubly sensitive target.

Part of a Wider Pattern
Polish officials and Western outlets have increasingly framed this incident within a broader campaign of suspected Russian sabotage across NATO and EU states supporting Kyiv. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk disclosed earlier in August that a Russian citizen had been detained on suspicion of being recruited by Russian services to carry out an assassination in Warsaw. Separately, an unexploded drone was discovered at a German airport earlier the same month.

The pattern extends beyond Poland. Slovakian police say they intercepted a planned attack on a drone-production facility operated by Skyeton, a Ukrainian-founded enterprise, arresting three suspects two locally and a third in Germany. A group calling itself "Global Citizens Against War 1984" claimed responsibility for the planned attack and demanded the release of two detained suspects.

In the Czech Republic, three suspects including Czech and American nationals were earlier arrested over an arson attack on a warehouse in Pardubice belonging to a company developing autonomous drone technology for Ukraine's military, an incident Czech authorities also investigated as a suspected terrorist attack.

Analysts and Western intelligence sources cited in European reporting suggest such operations are being calibrated to stay below the threshold that could trigger NATO's Article 5 collective-defence clause, allowing pressure to be applied on Ukraine's supply chain without provoking a formal alliance response.

The Bigger Picture
The Skarżysko-Kamienna fire adds to a lengthening list of 2026 incidents ranging from foiled assassination plots to airspace incursions and arson attacks on defence manufacturing sites that Polish and allied officials increasingly interpret as a sustained hybrid campaign against states sustaining Ukraine's war effort.

Poland, as one of Kyiv's most consistent military backers and a frontline NATO state, has in recent months significantly increased its security spending and military readiness in response to what officials describe as an escalating threat environment.

For now, Polish investigators have not publicly attributed the fire to any specific state actor, and the probe remains active. But the swift invocation of terrorism statutes, rather than treating the incident as ordinary arson, signals how seriously Warsaw is treating threats to the industrial base underpinning its own defence and its support for Ukraine.
