There's no rift between Boakye Agyarko and Bawumia – Campaign team
The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman aspirant, Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has rejected claims of a rift between him and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
The team said Mr Agyarko, who was formerly the Energy Minister, has no intention of interfering with the work of the flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general election.
It said he fully supports Dr Bawumia and believes his independence would enable him to unite the various factions within the party if elected chairman.
“The Flagbearer leads the campaign and carries the political message. The Chairman builds and runs the machine that delivers it to every polling station. Dr. Bawumia has his full support," the campaign team made the clarification in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Vincent Frimpong Manu, on Sunday, August 30.
It said Mr Agyarko had consistently maintained that he would not interfere with the work of the flagbearer and would instead focus on building a party structure capable of delivering the NPP’s message to every polling station.
According to the campaign, the former Energy Minister is also not seeking the chairmanship position as a stepping stone to contest another election.
It argued that his independence from the various camps within the party would position him to serve as a “fair referee” and reconcile members ahead of the 2028 elections.
The campaign team also defended Mr Agyarko’s record of service to the NPP, describing him as a founding member who joined the party in 1992.
It said he chaired the Danquah-Busia Club of North America, served as the party’s North America Coordinator and wrote the Letter from America column in The Statesman between 1993 and 1998.
The statement further highlighted his role as National Campaign Manager for the 2012 general election and his subsequent position as Policy Adviser to the NPP’s presidential candidate in 2016.
The campaign said Mr Agyarko was also instrumental in the Constituency Adoption arrangement, which helped organise diaspora support for the party.
It cautioned against what it described as “convenient revisionism” and the attempt by individuals to claim collective party achievements as personal accomplishments.
The NPP is scheduled to elect its national chairman and other national executives on October 3, as the party prepares to reorganise ahead of the 2028 general election.
