Bawumia donates GH¢50,000 to support St. Jude Catholic Church at Weija
New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has donated GH¢50,000 to support the operations and activities of St. Jude Catholic Church at Weija.
The donation forms part of Dr Bawumia’s continued support for the church, having previously contributed to the construction of the church building and an eight-seater washroom facility fitted with disability-friendly features.
Dr Bawumia was honoured during a Holy Mass held to recognise his contribution to the development of the church. He also commissioned the newly completed washroom facility.
As part of his visit, the former Vice President toured the Weija Leprosarium, where he interacted with patients and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting their welfare.
Presenting the GH¢50,000 to the church after the ceremony, Dr Bawumia pledged to continue supporting its activities.
He said his decision to support the church was influenced by the work of its priest, Fr Andrew Campbell, particularly his commitment to vulnerable and disadvantaged people.
“Father Campbell is an extraordinary person. He’s a true man of God, and he cares about the poor, the needy, the hungry, the lepers, the street children, the sick, and this is something I also care deeply about.
“So when he told me, when I came to see that he was putting up this church, I said, 'Father, I will help you to complete this church,' and provided the required resources. I’m so happy to see the church today. It is very beautiful,” he said.
Fr Andrew Campbell, in response, described Dr Bawumia’s support as evidence of his generosity, empathy and concern for people in need.
According to him, Dr Bawumia’s interactions with patients at the leprosarium demonstrated his genuine compassion for vulnerable people.
“Dr Bawumia has that empathy towards needy and sick people. I’ve noticed it in the way he interacts when he comes and meets all those who had leprosy. Today, you saw him; he shook hands with everybody, hugged them and shook hands with them. He’s helping so many people because he has love for humanity,” he said.
