Sulemana Braimah recalls Akufo-Addo’s caution over changing Ghana’s constitution
Sulemana Braimah has recalled former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s position on calls for constitutional amendments, saying he was cautious about changing provisions of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) said he had been part of civil society engagements with Akufo-Addo on constitutional provisions, particularly those linked to the fight against corruption.
Braimah said Akufo-Addo consistently argued that the Constitution had provided the foundation for Ghana’s democratic stability and therefore needed to be handled carefully.
“I had been part of some CSOs’ engagement with the former President on certain provisions within the Constitution and the need for constitutional amendment, particularly when it comes to fighting corruption,” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile.
He added that Akufo-Addo’s position during those engagements was clear.
“President Akufo-Addo on all occasions was very clear that as far as he was concerned, this is the Constitution that has guaranteed our democracy for the longest period and therefore we needed to be careful with tampering with the Constitution,” Braimah stated.
