Ho MCE assures residents of early operation of Sokode Etoe Abattoir

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ho, Hon. Stephen Adom, has assured residents that the Sokode Etoe Abattoir will soon become fully operational following the relocation of butchers from the old facility at Ho Zongo and ongoing efforts to secure investors to manage the new facility.

He gave the assurance in an interview with the media after the maiden edition of the “MCE’s Time with Chiefs and Queen Mothers” held at Hotel Stevens in Ho on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

According to Hon. Adom, significant work is being undertaken at the Sokode facility to bring it up to modern meat-processing standards.

He disclosed that butchers had already been relocated from the old abattoir at Ho Zongo to the new facility, while plans were also underway to establish another abattoir as part of the proposed 24-hour market project.

“As for the abattoir, it is going to be very special as far as meat processing is concerned,” he said.

The MCE, however, cautioned residents against patronising the old slaughterhouse at Ho Zongo, citing potential health risks associated with the facility.

“As for Zongo, no. If you go there, you risk contracting diseases because we do not have health specialists there who inspect the animals before they are slaughtered. I cannot assure you of the wholesomeness of the meat you are buying there. But at Sokode we have veterinary officers who inspect everything, so I will advise people not to go to the old site,” he warned.

On efforts to secure investors to manage the Sokode facility, Hon. Adom said prospective investors had expressed their readiness to commence operations but explained that the Assembly was required to follow due process before the government-owned facility could be handed over.

“The investors came and they even want to start work. But because the abattoir is government property, I cannot just give it out. I have to seek approval from my Executive Committee and the General Assembly. We are going through the processes, and once everything is done, they will start using the abattoir,” he explained.

He further disclosed that the investors were expected to establish poultry farms as part of their operations, which would help increase the supply of meat to the facility.

The MCE therefore encouraged residents to take advantage of the anticipated investment by venturing into poultry farming to support the supply chain once consultations between the government and the investors are completed and the Sokode Etoe Abattoir becomes fully operational.
