National Cathedral is a wonderful idea, but badly executed – Mahama Ayariga
Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has described the National Cathedral project as a “wonderful” and “exciting” idea.
He, however, said the project initiated by former President Nana Akufo-Addo was poorly executed, citing concerns about its location and the approach used to finance its construction.
Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, Mr Ayariga said Ghana’s deeply religious character made the establishment of worship centres, including a national cathedral, a worthwhile initiative.
“I also don't think there's any problem with the idea. I think it was a good idea that was badly executed.”
He said although Ghana is constitutionally a secular state, the country has large Christian, Muslim and traditional religious communities.
The Bawku Central MP further raised concerns about the location selected for the National Cathedral, arguing that the project could worsen traffic congestion in the area.
He also questioned the decision to use land in a busy part of the capital when other available land, particularly along the coast, could have been considered.
The minister-designate said his approach would be to engage the leadership of the Christian community on the future of the project before seeking the President’s support.
“If they remain committed to the construction of a national cathedral, I will engage the president, and if it is the wish of the president, I will wholeheartedly support and mobilize for the project to be continued, and God willing, completed," he said.
The National Cathedral project was initiated under the Akufo-Addo administration as a national interdenominational Christian worship and conference facility.
