Volta NPP divided over appointment of new regional officers
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Volta Region has been plunged into an internal dispute following conflicting positions over the appointment of new regional officers.
The Regional Secretariat has declared a list of appointments announced by Regional Chairman Makafui Kofi Woanyah null and void, arguing that the appointments were not approved through a properly constituted meeting of the elected Regional Executives.
In a statement dated August 26, 2026, and signed by Shabanton Moses Kwesi Dutsrogbé, the Regional Secretariat said no official meeting of the newly elected Regional Executives had been held since their election to deliberate on or approve the appointments.
The Secretariat referred to Article 9(10) of the NPP Constitution, which requires elected Regional Officers, within 14 days of their election and in consultation with the National Executive Committee, to appoint regional officers provided for under the party’s constitution.
It argued that the constitutional requirement envisages consultation and collective consideration by the Regional Executives before such appointments are made.
According to the Secretariat, since no meeting had been convened for that purpose, the appointments could not legitimately be presented as decisions of the elected Regional Executives.
The controversy follows a separate statement issued by Mr Woanyah announcing the appointment of 10 regional officers.
The appointments include Enyonam Morve as Regional Financial Secretary, Alhassan Samadu as Deputy Organiser, Mercy Kpodo as Deputy Women’s Organiser, Innocent Richard Dzamabi as Deputy Youth Organiser and Karim Raifu as Deputy Nasara Organiser.
Others named are Richard Kwadekpo as Electoral Affairs Officer, Ruben Dorcoo as Research Officer, Eric Kwame Akatsi Dumenu as Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Coordinator, Bless Kofi Dunyo as Legal Representative and Wisdom Jid Gakpo as Regional Special Duties Officer.
In his statement, Mr Woanyah said the appointments had been made in consultation with the National Executive Committee and in accordance with Article 9(2) of the NPP Constitution, as amended in 2025.
The Regional Secretariat has, however, disputed that interpretation and maintained that the appointments were not the outcome of a collective decision by the elected Regional Executives.
It has consequently urged party members and the public to disregard the list, describing the appointments as having no basis in a duly constituted decision of the Regional Executive Committee.
