NDC’s economic bragging rights come from Bawumia’s gold policy – Miracles Aboagye
Aspiring National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of relying on the gold purchase programme introduced by former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
According to him, the policy, which was criticised by the NDC while in opposition, has now become one of the key measures supporting the current government’s economic management.
Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Starr FM on Tuesday, August 25, the NPP communicator said the development demonstrates the foresight of Dr Bawumia and the importance of the gold purchase programme to Ghana’s economy.
“Guess what? Two years into their office, after they won power, the only thing that is keeping them alive, that is saving them, that is giving them any form of bragging rights, is the same policy Dr Mahamudu Bawumia introduced — the gold purchase programme,” Miracles Aboagye said.
Miracles Aboagye also defended Dr Bawumia’s handling of the economic challenges that confronted the previous NPP administration.
He said measures introduced under Dr Bawumia from 2022 helped to stabilise the economy after inflation had risen sharply.
According to him, inflation, which had risen above 50%, had fallen to about 23% by November and December 2024 following the implementation of the measures.
The NPP communicator argued that the subsequent reliance on the gold purchase programme by the current administration showed that Dr Bawumia’s policies were ahead of their time.
“That tells you the kind of person he[Dr. Bawumia] is. It tells you that he is way ahead of his time,” he said.
Miracles Aboagye said the development should strengthen the argument that Dr Bawumia had the economic vision and experience required to lead Ghana.
