Faith, Factionalism, and Forgetting: Unpacking the Wontumi Prayer Vigils

In the heart of Kumasi, under the cover of darkness, hundreds of citizens recently gathered not to mourn a national tragedy or pray for economic relief, but to hold an intense, emotional night vigil. Their prayer topic? The immediate release of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi. Just weeks prior, an Accra High Court handed Wontumi a 20-year hard labor sentence for facilitating devastating illegal mining (galamsey) operations in a protected forest reserve. Yet, watching the fervent prayers and the tears shed, an outsider would think a blameless martyr was being persecuted. Strikingly, on-the-ground interviews revealed a troubling reality: when asked, many of the ordinary citizens gathered at these vigils could not state the legal reasons for Wontumi's imprisonment. This jarring disconnect raises a critical question for our national conscience: has political tribalism rendered a segment of our population entirely myopic to crimes committed against the very state they live in?

The Anatomy of a Disconnect: Why Supporters Defend the Indefensible

The spectacle of citizens praying for the release of a convicted environmental offender highlights several deep-seated issues in Ghanaian socio-political culture:

• Weaponized Ignorance: Field reports show many attendees are ordinary party faithful bused to venues without a clear understanding of the case facts. They are told a "party hero is under attack," and they respond to the call based on loyalty rather than legal or environmental literacy.
• The "Political Prisoner" Narrative: NPP coordinators and Wontumi’s campaign team have deliberately reframed a clear-cut environmental crime into a story of political victimization and internal party sabotage.
• Severe Environmental Amnesia: The prayers completely bypass the physical reality of galamsey—poisoned water bodies, destroyed forest reserves, and the long-term threat to Ghana's agricultural survival.
• Hyper-Partisanship over Citizenship: For the core loyalist, the survival of the party faction and its leadership takes absolute precedence over national laws and the collective well-being of the state.

Moving Forward: Strategic Recommendations and Suggestions

To cure this state of political myopia and ensure that national laws are respected above partisan figures, Ghana must adopt aggressive, structural reforms:

• De-Politicize Environmental Enforcement: The state must maintain an iron-clad, independent stance on mining laws. Wontumi’s ongoing detention until his October 15 appeal hearing must be handled strictly by judicial merit, without executive interference.
• Aggressive Public Legal Education: National institutions like the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) must launch grassroots campaigns in local languages explaining the specific legal, economic, and environmental consequences of high-profile court rulings.
• Media Accountability: Outlets like Modern Ghana and broadcast journalists must consistently display images of the environmental destruction alongside reports of political vigils to force a visual confrontation with the reality of the crime.
• Political Party Reform: The NPP hierarchy must show leadership by enforcing strict ethical codes. Allowing an incarcerated convict to pick up nomination forms for a National Chairmanship race signals to the grassroots that the party condones lawlessness.

The sight of Ghanaians lifting holy hands to pray for the freedom of a man convicted of tearing apart our forest reserves is a stark symptom of a broken civic conscience. When political loyalty becomes so blind that citizens cannot separate a criminal verdict from a political witch hunt—and when many participants do not even understand the cause they are chanting for—the foundations of our democracy are at risk. God will not descend from heaven to fix waters that we willfully allowed individuals to pollute in the name of politics. True patriotism requires us to put the survival of Ghana ahead of the survival of any political chairperson. Wontumi’s case must serve as a turning point where rule of law finally triumphs over partisan shield-bearing.

A Prayer for Discernment, Forgiveness, and National Awakening

• For the Spirit of Truth: We lift up our fellow citizens who gather in the dark, asking that the light of truth pierces any cloud of political deception, so they may see realities clearly beyond partisan slogans.
• For Spiritual Discernment: We pray that hearts are opened to recognize that true faith cannot be weaponized to shield injustice, and that protecting the land God gave us is our highest earthly stewardship.
• For Grace and Forgiveness: We ask for divine mercy upon our nation for the collective silence and blind loyalty that has allowed greed to poison our rivers and strip away our pristine forest reserves.
• For the Enlightenment of Minds: We pray that the scales of political tribalism fall from the eyes of the grassroots, replacing blind allegiance with a deep, unshakeable love for the survival and future of Ghana.
• For Courageous Leadership: We ask for the fortitude to put country over party, reminding us all that the waters we destroy today will leave a legacy of thirst and disease for the generations of tomorrow.
