NPP communicator backs direct election of MMDCEs, calls for broader vetting committee

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communication Officer for Kpando, Lewis Stateman Dennis Addeh, has thrown his support behind the proposed direct election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), describing the initiative as a positive step towards strengthening Ghana's local governance system.

Speaking on Akpini Radio's Akpini Good Morning Show on Saturday, Mr Addeh said allowing residents to directly elect their MMDCEs would deepen local democracy, improve accountability at the grassroots and reduce excessive control by central government.

He, however, raised concerns about the proposed composition of the committee that would vet prospective candidates for the positions.

According to him, the committee should be expanded to include representatives of religious organisations, youth groups and traditional authorities to make the process more inclusive and credible.

Mr Addeh argued that involving these groups would bring a wider range of perspectives to the vetting process while increasing public confidence in the selection of candidates.

He maintained his support for the direct election of MMDCEs but urged stakeholders to consider broadening the vetting committee as part of efforts to strengthen decentralisation, participation and effective local governance in Ghana.
