NPP Ahafo Communications Directorate rejects Asunafo North MCE’s 'useless creation' comment
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ahafo Regional Communications Directorate has strongly condemned comments attributed to the Asunafo North Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Joseph Akparibo, describing the creation of the Ahafo Region as “useless.”
According to the Directorate, led by Alfred Asiedu, the remarks are not only inaccurate but deeply inappropriate, given the history, sacrifices and collective mobilisation that culminated in the establishment of the region.
The Directorate emphasised that the creation of the Ahafo Region was the product of decades‑long advocacy by traditional authorities, religious leaders, civil society groups, the media, local government actors and citizens across political lines. It further referenced the overwhelming endorsement recorded during the referendum as proof that the region’s creation reflected the genuine aspirations of the people for administrative decentralisation and accelerated development.
Contrary to claims that the region has yielded little benefit, the NPP Communications Directorate highlighted notable improvements in major road networks, including the Techimantia–Akomadan and Bechem–Tepa corridors, as well as interventions linking Goaso, Mim and Kasapin. It added that the establishment of regional institutions has stimulated economic activity and created jobs, particularly in hospitality, real estate and commerce.
The Directorate also defended the decision to situate some regional offices outside Goaso, arguing that distributing government institutions across the region promotes balanced development rather than concentrating opportunities solely in the regional capital. It noted that the presence of regional directorates in various districts has expanded employment opportunities and brought essential government services closer to residents.
Expressing concern over what it described as disrespect toward traditional authorities and citizens who championed the creation of the region, the NPP called on Hon. Akparibo to retract his comments and issue an unqualified apology to the chiefs and people of Ahafo.
While acknowledging that legitimate concerns may exist regarding the pace of development, the Directorate maintained that describing the region’s creation as “useless” undermines the aspirations, sacrifices and achievements associated with its establishment. It urged stakeholders to focus on identifying outstanding challenges and working collectively to ensure that Ahafo realises its full development potential.
