Galamsey Is Destroying Ghana’s Cognitive Future - One IQ Point at a Time

Let me begin by quoting myself:

When we discuss galamsey, attention usually centres on the poisoned rivers, devastated forests, ruined cocoa farms and enormous pits left across the landscape. These are visible and horrifying. But another form of destruction may be taking place quietly inside the brains of our children.

It cannot be photographed by a drone. It does not immediately turn a river brown. It may take years before its full consequences become apparent.

Galamsey may be gradually diminishing the intellectual potential of an entire generation.

How mercury enters the human food chain

Mercury is commonly used in artisanal and small-scale gold mining to bind gold particles into an amalgam. When the amalgam is heated, mercury vapour is released into the air. Mercury also enters the surrounding soil and water.

Once deposited in rivers and wetlands, microorganisms can transform it into methylmercury, a highly toxic compound that accumulates in aquatic organisms and becomes increasingly concentrated as it moves up the food chain. Contaminated fish can therefore expose people living far beyond the immediate mining site.

The World Health Organization warns that mercury exposure can cause cognitive impairment, kidney damage, visual and speech problems, and lifelong disability. Pregnant women, unborn babies and young children are particularly vulnerable because their brains and nervous systems are still developing.

A miner may knowingly accept occupational risks in exchange for gold. An unborn child downstream makes no such choice.

Why a one-point IQ decline matters
A loss of one IQ point in a single individual may appear insignificant. That person may never notice it, and no doctor may ever diagnose it.

But when the average IQ of an entire population falls by one point, the consequences can be enormous.

IQ scores are distributed across a population. Most people are concentrated around the average, while smaller numbers are found at the lower and upper ends. If the entire distribution shifts downward - even slightly ' many more people move into the range where they may require educational and social support, while fewer remain in the range associated with exceptional cognitive performance.

Using the conventional IQ distribution, with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15, a fall in the population average from 100 to 99 would approximately:

These figures are statistical illustrations, not predictions of what has already happened in Ghana. But they demonstrate an important principle: a small change in the national average can produce a disproportionately large change at both ends of the population.

The danger is not simply that every Ghanaian becomes “slightly less intelligent.” It is that thousands more children may struggle in school, while thousands fewer may reach the highest levels of cognitive performance.

The economic cost of diminished intelligence

Cognitive ability influences learning, reasoning, memory, problem-solving and workplace performance. A population-wide reduction therefore affects far more than examination results.

It can reduce productivity, innovation, technical competence and national income. It can increase the need for remedial education and social support. It can weaken the quality of decisions made in institutions, businesses and government.

Some public-health economic models have estimated that each IQ point lost may be associated with a measurable reduction in lifetime economic productivity. The precise monetary value differs between countries and should not be treated as a universal constant. The central point, however, is beyond dispute: cognitive damage carries consequences throughout a person’s education and working life.

If a generation of Ghanaian children suffers even a small average decline in cognitive performance because of preventable exposure to mercury, lead, arsenic and other mining-related toxicants, Ghana will pay for it for decades.

We will pay through poorer educational outcomes.

We will pay through reduced productivity.
We will pay through greater pressure on the health and social-support systems.

We will pay through diminished scientific, technological and institutional capacity.

And we will pay through the solutions, inventions and discoveries that damaged minds may never have the opportunity to produce.

You cannot build a knowledge economy while poisoning children’s brains

Ghana says it wants to become a knowledge-based economy. We speak about digital transformation, artificial intelligence, industrialisation, medical advancement and technological independence.

But no country can build a knowledge economy while allowing toxic substances to enter the bodies and developing brains of its children.

We cannot distribute laptops in schools while contaminating the water the pupils drink.

We cannot expand universities while destroying the neurological potential of their future students.

We cannot speak proudly about STEM education while permitting mercury to circulate through rivers, fish, food and human bodies.

A nation’s most important infrastructure is not its roads, bridges or buildings. It is the collective intelligence, health and competence of its people. Physical infrastructure can be reconstructed. A child’s brain damaged during critical stages of development may never fully recover.

The injustice falls most heavily on children

The cruelest aspect of galamsey-related contamination is that those who receive the gold are often separated from those who bear the damage.

The profits may be enjoyed by miners, financiers, gold dealers, political protectors and exporters. The consequences are transferred to farming communities, pregnant women, unborn children and future generations.

A child does not have to enter a mining pit to become a victim of galamsey. The child may be exposed through the mother during pregnancy, through contaminated food and water, or simply by living near a mining or gold-processing community.

The damage may later appear as difficulty concentrating, impaired memory, delayed development or poor school performance. Society may label such a child lazy or unintelligent without ever recognising that the child’s biological potential may have been compromised before birth.

That is not merely environmental mismanagement. It is an assault on equal opportunity.

Ghana is exchanging intelligence for gold

For a country of approximately 35 million people, an average loss equivalent to one IQ point would represent about 35 million person-points of cognitive potential. The figure is illustrative, but it conveys the scale of what may be at stake.

We are not simply digging gold out of the ground. We may be extracting intellectual potential from the brains of Ghanaian children and exchanging it for the private enrichment of a relatively small number of people.

The gold will be exported.
The profits may be spent.
The excavators will eventually rust.
But the neurological, educational and economic consequences may remain with Ghana for generations.

This is why galamsey cannot be treated merely as an environmental nuisance, a water-treatment problem or an unfortunate side effect of unemployment. It is a national health emergency, a child-protection crisis and a threat to Ghana’s future human capital.

The question is no longer only how many rivers have been poisoned or how many hectares of forest have been destroyed. We must also ask:

How many unborn children are being exposed?
How many developing brains are being silently injured?

How much of Ghana’s future intelligence are we prepared to sacrifice for gold?

A government that allows this danger to continue is not merely failing to protect the environment. It is gambling with the biological and intellectual inheritance of the nation.

No economy survives the death of its ecology. And no nation can think its way into a better future while systematically poisoning the brains that must do the thinking.
