‎The Condom That Changes Colour to Warn of Disease: Where the 'S.T.EYE' Idea Actually Stands

A teenage idea that keeps resurfacing
Every so often, a story resurfaces online about a condom that changes colour to warn users of a sexually transmitted infection (STI) before they even leave the bedroom. The idea traces back to 2015, when three British schoolboys Daanyaal Ali and Chirag Shah, both 14, and Muaz Nawaz, 13, students at Isaac Newton Academy in Essex, England proposed a concept called the "S.T.EYE" at the UK's TeenTech Awards, winning the competition's best health innovation prize.

How it was designed to work
The S.T.EYE concept envisioned a latex condom coated with antibodies on both its inner and outer surfaces. If bodily fluids containing STI-related antigens the proteins associated with bacteria and viruses came into contact with the latex, an antibody-antigen reaction would trigger a visible colour change, similar to the chemistry behind a home pregnancy test or the ELISA method used in HIV testing. The designers proposed different colours for different infections: green for chlamydia, blue for syphilis, a yellowish tone for herpes, and purple for genital warts or HPV. Because the condom would react to fluid from either partner, the idea was that it could flag an infection in the wearer or their partner, not just one or the other.

Ali told reporters at the time that the goal was privacy and speed: detecting an infection "in the privacy of their own homes without the invasive procedures at the doctors," rather than requiring a clinic visit to find out. The trio said they were motivated by the scale of the problem England alone recorded well over 400,000 new STI diagnoses in 2014, according to the Public Health England figures they cited.

Still a concept, not a product
More than a decade on, the S.T.EYE has not become a commercially available product. It remains what it was in 2015: an award-winning idea rather than a working prototype.

Science commentators raised doubts from the start about whether the underlying chemistry could actually be miniaturised and stabilised onto a condom's surface reliably enough for real-world use, and no peer-reviewed clinical device based on the concept has since reached the market. The idea has nonetheless continued to attract media attention roughly once a year, resurfacing again in tech and lifeclass coverage as recently as late 2025, usually framed as a promising but unrealised piece of health innovation.

The unresolved problems
Beyond the science, public health commentators have pointed to a harder set of questions the concept never fully answered. A colour change during intercourse would deliver an STI diagnosis at an emotionally charged, high-stigma moment, with no counselling and no confirmation raising the risk of confrontations between partners rather than calm, informed decisions. Users would still need a clinic visit to confirm any result and begin treatment, meaning the condom could flag a risk but not resolve it. And a device that reveals a partner's status in real time raises consent and disclosure questions that a school science-fair concept was never designed to address.

Why the idea keeps circulating
Despite never reaching pharmacies, the S.T.EYE remains a useful reference point in conversations about STI stigma and self-testing. The World Health Organization estimates more than a million STIs are acquired globally every day, the large majority through unprotected sex, and self-testing technologies more broadly from at-home HIV kits to mail-in chlamydia tests have expanded considerably since 2015. The colour-changing condom is best understood today not as an imminent product, but as an early, symbolic proposal that helped push conversations about discreet, stigma-free STI detection into the mainstream a goal now being pursued through other, more medically validated self-testing technologies rather than the original concept itself.
