Tetteh Laryea Cyril scores Mahama's gov’t 85% for best performance in less than two years
Deputy Director of Administration at the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and aspiring NDC Greater Accra Regional Communications Officer, Tetteh Laryea Cyril (TLC) popularly known as The Humble Lion, says the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has performed creditably despite not yet hitting two years in office.
According to him, when weighed against public expectations and the state of the nation inherited, the party deserves high marks for its stewardship so far.
“Regarding our performance and public expectations, I would score the party 85 percent considering what we have achieved so far, even though we are yet to hit two years in government,” he stated.
Mr. Tetteh said he is convinced the party is systematically delivering on its promises to Ghanaians, despite the enormous challenges it met on assumption of office.
“I strongly believe the party is gradually working very hard to honour our manifesto promises one after the other,” he added.
Speaking on the state of the economy inherited by the Mahama-led administration, The Humble Lion painted a gloomy picture, insisting the previous administration left behind a near-collapsed economy.
“We took over a country with a dying economy, an economy that was almost in the intensive care unit,” he said.
He explained that investor confidence had been badly eroded before the NDC took over.
“It was an economy that had lost its enviable attractions, and International Economic Bodies had no confidence in the economy we inherited,” Mr. Tetteh noted.
On the energy sector, he said the situation was equally dire, with severe fuel shortages threatening power supply at the time of takeover.
“We took over a country where even the energy sector was in shambles. There was no gas to power electricity generation in the country,” he recalled.
He praised President John Dramani Mahama for his swift intervention to stabilize the sector.
“I remember the emergency meetings held by His Excellency and his cabinet within the energy sector to bring stability and peace of mind to the citizenry in the early stages of the NDC taking over government,” he said.
Touching on education, Mr. Tetteh said government has delivered on its promise to ease the burden on tertiary students.
“We promised free tuition in most of our tertiary institutions. I strongly believe that has been done and it is still ongoing,” he stressed.
He said the NDC’s focus on the youth has been deliberate and well-thought-through, anchored in what he described as a Youth Manifesto.
“On coming into power, the NDC introduced what I refer to as the youth manifesto. When you look at the youth manifesto, there was a lot of content that brought hope to the youth of our country,” he stated.
According to him, flagship interventions such as the 24-Hour Economy, the National Apprenticeship Programme and the revitalized Youth Employment Agency are already yielding results across the country.
“The famous 24-hour economy, the famous Apprenticeship Programme, and today the famous Youth Employment Agency activities have spread across the length and breadth of this country. Their impact is being felt even in our assemblies, which are the lowest level of governance in this country,” he said.
On the cost of living, particularly fuel prices, Mr. Tetteh argued that significant relief has been brought to Ghanaians compared to what the NDC inherited.
“We inherited fuel at a very high cost. Petrol prices were so high. Today in Ghana, I strongly believe that is no longer the case. Whatever we are buying today is manageable,” he said.
He insisted the government will not hide behind global challenges to justify economic hardship, as he accused the previous government of doing.
“We will not make mistakes by blaming negative international events, such as wars, to mask what we are doing in this country and make it seem as if that is the reason prices may go up,” he emphasized.
Mr. Tetteh, who is seeking to become the next NDC Greater Accra Regional Communications Officer, said any communication strategy ahead of the next elections must deliberately target young people.
“Putting that aside, as I have always said, I would want us to focus on the youth, who are the teeming majority of voters in the country and need to be spoken to well,” he noted.
He called on Ghanaians to appreciate the tireless efforts being made by President Mahama and his appointees to improve lives.
“Ghanaians must come to the realisation that the Ministries, Agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal Assemblies Members of Parliament and His Excellency John Dramani Mahama are working so hard and tirelessly that every single Ghanaian youth, and by extension every Ghanaian, is being taken care of,” The Humble Lion posited.
“Putting that aside, as I have always intimated, I will want us to focus on the youth, who are the teaming majority of voters in our dear nation who need to be spoken to so well to never forget where the NPP took us to and where His Excellency is sending us,” he noted
Mr. Tetteh is currently touring the Greater Accra Region to canvass support for his Communications Officer bid ahead of the NDC regional elections.
