2024 defeat: 'I could've asked for recount but I chose peace over everything' – Kpemka

Former Tempane Member of Parliament, Lawyer Joseph Kpemka

Former Tempane Member of Parliament, Lawyer Joseph Kpemka, has disclosed that he could have requested a recount of the 2024 parliamentary election results but opted not to pursue the matter in the interest of peace.

Speaking on Bolgatanga-based Dreamz FM about his defeat, Lawyer Kpemka said he believed certain circumstances surrounding the election contributed to his loss but decided to accept the outcome rather than challenge it.

“There was a conspiracy of faith that happened, and that is the reason why I lost, but I accepted it,” he said.

He explained that while he had the option of requesting a recount to improve his vote tally, he considered maintaining peace more important than contesting the results.

“I could have asked for a recount to push my numbers, but I chose peace over everything,” he stated.

According to the former MP, the verdict of the electorate must ultimately be respected, regardless of the outcome.

“The voice of the people is the voice of God, so I thanked them and left,” he said.

Despite accepting the election results, however, Lawyer Kpemka maintained that his record in terms of development projects delivered to the Tempane Constituency remains stronger than that of his successor, Hon. Madam Lydia Kpemka.

He said his assessment was based specifically on the development initiatives undertaken during his tenure as MP and not on personal considerations.

“I do not mark my own script, but I have no doubt that if it is about development, then my wife, Hon. Madam Lydia, has not done better than I did,” he stated.

Lawyer Kpemka said he implemented several development projects across the constituency during his time in Parliament and remained confident that his record could withstand comparison.

“I have done lots of development in Tempane,” he added.
