Bawumia can only be president of old students’ association, not Ghana — Solomon Owusu
The National Communications Director of the United Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has said former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will not become President of Ghana.
He said the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to field Dr Bawumia again for the 2028 presidential election does not represent a new political strategy.
Dr Bawumia lost the 2024 presidential election after securing 41.74% of the valid votes cast.
Speaking on GTV on Tuesday, August 18, Mr Owusu said the NPP had largely retained the same party structures that supported Dr Bawumia’s 2024 campaign and was therefore repeating its previous approach.
“Clearly, the NPP has not done anything new. They presented Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in 2024. He had 41.74%. They have retained most of their regional executives,” he said.
According to Mr Owusu, the party’s decision to retain Dr Bawumia amounted to an attempt to repeat a strategy that had already been rejected by voters in the 2024 election.
He claimed that the NPP did not conduct polling station-level elections and had instead retained the executives who previously supported Dr Bawumia.
Mr Owusu also predicted that the NPP would perform poorly in the 2028 elections, claiming that it would not cross 18% of the votes.
“I believe that he could be the president of the old boys’ association of the Tamale Secondary School, and not Ghana,” he said.
Dr Bawumia was officially selected as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 election in in January 2026, as part of the party’s preparation to wrestle power from the party.
