‘You can attack our personality but post-regime accountability awaits you’ – Afenyo-Markin warns GoldBod officials

Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has warned that officials responsible for the operations of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) could face accountability over reported financial losses linked to the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said the Minority would continue to demand answers from the government and GoldBod over what he described as significant financial losses to the state.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, he cautioned officials involved in managing the programme against assuming that the issues surrounding its financial performance would be forgotten.

“The Minority will say this firmly and boldly. It doesn’t matter the adjectives you will use to attack our personality. We know that a day of reckoning will come. They should remember that post-regime accountability awaits them,” he said.

His comments follow an August 2026 report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which indicated that the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, implemented through GoldBod, recorded losses exceeding US$1.7 billion in 2025.

The IMF said the losses were equivalent to about 1.5 per cent of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Mr Afenyo-Markin maintained that the Minority would not be discouraged by criticism over its scrutiny of GoldBod and the gold purchasing programme.

He said the caucus would continue pressing the government and relevant officials to account for the financial implications of the programme.

The Minority Leader further cautioned those currently overseeing the programme that their decisions and actions could come under scrutiny in the future.

He insisted that public officials must be prepared to account for their stewardship, particularly where significant public funds are involved.
