Kushner in Jerusalem: Three Hours With Netanyahu, and a Gaza Plan Still on the Brink

Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law and Special Envoy for Peace Missions, held an hours long closed-door meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday, in the latest bid to salvage a Gaza ceasefire roadmap that Netanyahu formally rejected earlier this month.

Inside the Jerusalem Meeting
The session, which stretched roughly three hours, brought together Kushner, Netanyahu, Trump's Gaza envoy Nickolay Mladenov and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, a member of the Board of Peace's executive board. Neither Israel nor the White House commented publicly on the substance of the closed-door talks, though a source familiar with the discussions told Haaretz that the two sides reached an interim understanding allowing Israel to continue carrying out targeted strikes in Gaza for now, even as work continues on the broader disarmament and reconstruction plan.

The Jerusalem meeting came a day after Kushner held a rare, two-hour sit-down with Hamas's new top leader, Khalil al-Hayya, in Egypt the first such direct engagement of its kind as Washington presses both sides toward the 15-point, US-backed road map meant to move the fragile truce forward.

Why Netanyahu Is Digging In
Netanyahu formally rejected the roadmap two weeks ago, objecting chiefly to provisions that would see Hamas disarm and hand its weapons to a Palestinian third party while Israeli forces retain oversight. His resistance comes against a backdrop of significant domestic pressure: he faces a contested election on October 27, governing atop a coalition that includes hardline voices such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who has publicly called for full Israeli conquest and permanent control of the Gaza Strip.

Hamas, for its part, says it has already agreed to the disarmament terms and is pressing mediators and the Board of Peace to "compel" Israel to sign on as well. With the anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attack approaching and roughly two million Palestinians still living amid the war-demolished enclave, the pressure on all sides to produce a durable outcome is mounting.

A Familiar Playbook, A Different Moment
For longtime observers of Kushner's Middle East diplomacy, the choreography in Jerusalem the closed-door session, the terse statements, the visible presence of a trusted inner circle echoes his earlier stint as senior adviser during Trump's first term, when he helped broker the Abraham Accords. What is different this time is the scale of what is being negotiated: not a normalization agreement between willing partners, but the terms of an end to a war, the disarmament of an armed movement, and the future governance of a devastated territory.

Kushner now holds the formal title of Special Envoy for Peace Missions, a post he has occupied since February 2026 alongside fellow envoy Steve Witkoff, giving his current Gaza diplomacy an institutional weight his earlier, more informal role lacked. Whether that weight is enough to move Netanyahu off his rejection of the roadmap before the October election, and before the Gaza ceasefire's second phase is due remains, for now, unresolved.
