Africa: On The Certificate Factories We Call Universities
This piece grew out of my reply to a recent WhatsApp group discussion. I greatly expanded on my contributions.
There is perhaps no greater paradox in modern Africa than the fact that our continent possesses thousands of professors, hundreds of universities, countless faculties of engineering, agriculture, medicine, architecture, economics, business administration, and computer science, yet remains the world’s largest consumers of other people’s inventions.
Apart from being eternal whiners, we Africans have become experts at discussing development without ever developing; masters at explaining progress without ever making it.
We are talkers; doing is not our particular forte.
We continue to confuse perambulation with motion.
The question that we fail to ask is: If, as they say, knowledge is power, why does Africa, a continent overflowing with academic credentials, remain so economically weak and powerless?
As is our practice on this blog, we pose questions that deserve to be asked not with diplomatic restraint or academic politeness, but with bluntness.
The question here today is a rather simple one: Why can’t African universities take the lead in developing Africa as it’s done in other societies?
We don't consider this a rhetorical flourish; it is the defining question of our generation. It is a question that every African, literate or illiterate, should be asking.
All around us, African universities proudly advertise their engineering departments. Every one of them boasts agricultural faculties. The Business administration departments churn out graduates by the thousands annually. There are countless schools of environmental science, information technology, industrial design, chemistry, and economics.
On paper, the intellectual infrastructure required to develop and transform Africa already exists.
Yet beyond the walls of campuses, the continent continues to import tractors, machinery, software, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, processed food, industrial equipment, and even simple consumer products that should have been designed and manufactured locally decades ago.
We import toothpicks to pick our teeth after we consume Asian rice stewed with Italian canned tomatoes and British mad cows.
What, then, are African universities actually producing for domestic and industrial consumption?
Surely, the purpose of an engineering faculty cannot simply be to graduate engineers and hand over certificates.
The purpose of engineering is to solve engineering problems. Likewise, the purpose of agricultural science cannot be merely to publish scholarly papers on food insecurity while millions struggle to feed themselves.
Any knowledge that never leaves the laboratory is an intellectual taxidermy, beautifully curated, carefully displayed, and completely lifeless.
We Africans thus face the question of how to animate our theoretical papers into practical products.
Even more bewildering is the absence of collaboration within our universities themselves. The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.
We have many questions here: If an engineering department develops an innovative machine, why can’t the business administration department help in packaging, marketing, and commercializing it?
If African agricultural researchers discover improved farming methods, why are our business schools not transforming those discoveries into enterprises that serve farmers across the continent?
Why do departments of our universities in Africa operate like isolated kingdoms rather than parts of a single institution dedicated to national and continental advancement?
This institutional fragmentation is not merely inefficient; it is economically criminal.
The ever-inventive Dutch long ago understood what too many African universities still refuse to comprehend.
The Wageningen University (WU) has become one of the world’s foremost agricultural institutions not because it writes elegant journal articles, but because it relentlessly converts scientific knowledge into practical solutions that improve farming, strengthen food security, and generate national wealth. WU’s laboratories are extensions of Dutch agriculture itself.
The same philosophy defines the Delft University of Technology. DUT is not internationally respected because it stages colorful graduation ceremonies or publishes glossy prospectuses. It commands respect because its engineers solve problems at the highest level of global science and industry.
That a university in a hard-to-find-on-the-map country like the Netherlands should serve as a consultant to NASA is no accident. It is the inevitable consequence of a university that understands its mission is not the accumulation of academic prestige but the creation of practical knowledge with measurable value.
That is how serious nations think.
Dutch universities function as research laboratories for the economy, innovation hubs for industry and solution factories for society. Every scientific breakthrough is viewed as a potential enterprise. Every research project asks not merely whether something can be discovered, but whether that discovery can improve lives, create employment, strengthen national competitiveness, or expand economic prosperity.
Africa, tragically, has perfected the opposite model.
Our universities have become magnificent factories for manufacturing diplomas, certificates, and graduates taught through a rote system that turned them into perfect parrots.
In Africa, graduation ceremonies have become elaborate rituals of self-congratulation. University vice-chancellors, dressed like Witches of Endor, applaud one another, while politicians deliver predictable speeches celebrating academic excellence.
Cameras flash. Academic gowns flow majestically across decorated stages. Proud parents shed tears of joy as yet another generation of paper-pushers receives beautifully framed diplomas.
Then the applause fades.
The graduates join the battalion of unemployed (shall we say the unemployable) because they can’t make a practical contribution. Their inventions remain inside forgotten dissertations. The research gathers dust on library shelves. Communities continue to live without reliable electricity, treated water, affordable housing, efficient transport, quality healthcare, or sufficient food.
After all the pomp, pageantry and hooplas, the continent returns to importing the very solutions its universities should have been creating.
One is therefore compelled to ask the uncomfortable question: if universities cannot solve the problems of the societies that finance them, by what standard should they be judged successful?
A university’s greatness should never be measured by the number of degrees it awards but by the number of society’s problems it solves.
The question should be if its engineering faculty reduce the cost of housing? Can its agricultural scientists transform food production? Can its chemists develop affordable fertilizers? Can its medical researchers reduce dependence on imported pharmaceuticals? Can its architects design sustainable communities? Can its business schools transform campus innovations into globally competitive enterprises?
These are the questions that matter.
History has never rewarded societies that merely admired knowledge. It rewards societies that weaponized knowledge against ignorance, poverty, and underdevelopment.
History shows that neither America nor China dominates technological innovation through academic rhetoric. Their universities became incubators for industries that changed the world.
Africa must now decide whether its universities wish to remain theatres of intellectual performance or become the continent’s workshops of civilization.
The age of self-congratulatory ceremonies, institutional chest-beating and endless high-fives over graduation statistics must come to an end.
Africa has celebrated enough certificates. It has framed enough diplomas. It has accumulated enough academic papers to fill libraries from Cairo to Cape Town. None of these, by themselves, has fed the hungry, housed the homeless, powered industries, or transformed the continent into an economic giant.
The time has come to put into practice the theories that have been taught for generation after generation. Let engineering departments build industries rather than merely teach engineering. Let agricultural faculties feed nations rather than merely analyze famines. Let business schools commercialize African inventions instead of endlessly studying foreign case studies. Let research laboratories become the birthplaces of companies, technologies and industries that strengthen Africa’s economic sovereignty.
That is, after all, what universities everywhere else have done. They became partners in nation-building. They solved society’s problems. They transformed ideas into products, discoveries into industries, and knowledge into prosperity.
We must demand nothing less from our institutions of higher learning. For a continent drowning in big challenges, our greatest tragedy is not the absence of intelligence; it’s the continued celebration of an inherited colonial educational system that has mastered the art of producing papers, diplomas, and certificates while leaving untouched the very problems that tertiary education was created to solve.
