Brandon Hudspeth Begins Tenure as New US Consul General in Lagos

The United States Consulate General in Lagos has announced the arrival of its new Consul General, Brandon Hudspeth, who begins three-year tenure as the senior US government representative across the 17 states of southern Nigeria.

A Familiar Face Returning to Lagos
Hudspeth, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, succeeds Consul General Rick Swart, who retired from the US Foreign Service in July 2026. His posting marks a return to Lagos, where he previously served as Political-Economic Section Chief from 2020 to 2022, and a period that deepened US engagement in trade, governance, and regional security.

"I am honored to return to Lagos as the U.S. Consul General. I know firsthand the strength of the U.S.-Nigeria partnership and the extraordinary energy, ingenuity, and entrepreneurial spirit that Nigerians and Americans share," Hudspeth said, adding that he looks forward to reconnecting with old friends and building new partnerships.

Two Decades of Diplomatic Experience
A native of Texas, Hudspeth brings nearly two decades of diplomatic experience spanning Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Washington, DC. His most recent assignment was as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Windhoek, Namibia. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement at the US Embassy in the Philippines, leading American civilian assistance programmes supporting law enforcement, rule of law, counter-narcotics efforts, and maritime security cooperation.

His postings have also included Mali, Cuba, and Afghanistan, alongside assignments in Washington at the State Department's Operations Center, on the Secretariat Staff supporting the Secretary of State, and as a desk officer in the Bureau of African Affairs.

Hudspeth is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Morehouse College, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Economics. He holds a Master of Public Policy from Harvard University's Kennedy School and is a Distinguished Graduate of the National Defense University, where he obtained a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy.

Priorities for the Consulate
Hudspeth said his priorities in Lagos would include expanding trade and investment, driving innovation, strengthening collaboration in the technology and creative industries, and creating new opportunities for shared prosperity between Nigeria and the United States. His arrival also coincides with a broader reorganization of US consular operations across Africa, following the transfer of routine US visa processing from the US Embassy in Abuja to the Lagos consulate since August 1.
