Two killed, five injured in head-on collision involving MMT bus at Assin Fosu
Two people have died following a head-on collision between a Scienta vehicle and a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus at Assin Fosu in the Central Region.
The crash occurred at about 7 p.m. on Sunday when the Scienta, travelling from Cape Coast, reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided with the MMT bus, which was travelling from Kumasi.
The deceased were identified as the driver of the Scienta and one of its passengers. Five other occupants of the vehicle sustained injuries and were transported to a hospital for medical attention.
According to the Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, the accident happened after the vehicle being overtaken slowed down to make a turn.
He said the Scienta driver then moved into the opposite lane while attempting to overtake, resulting in the collision with the oncoming MMT bus.
The force of the impact caused the MMT bus to veer off the road and crash into the wall of Obiri Yeboah Senior High School. The wall subsequently collapsed.
Three children who were walking along the road were also struck by the bus and sustained injuries.
ASP Lumor said the children had been admitted to a hospital and were in stable condition.
The MMT bus driver, William Aboagye, said none of the passengers on his bus was killed in the crash.
He said the collision happened suddenly when the Scienta moved into the path of the bus while attempting to overtake another vehicle.
The police have commenced investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The crash has renewed concerns about the dangers associated with reckless overtaking, particularly on busy highways where motorists, pedestrians and other road users often share limited road space.
Motorists have consequently been urged to exercise extreme caution when overtaking and ensure that the road ahead is sufficiently clear before attempting such manoeuvres.
