Politics in Ghana has a simple math: when the NPP wins big in Ashanti, Eastern, and Central Regions, the party wins national elections. These three regions are not just important — they are decisive.

Ashanti is the NPP’s stronghold. Eastern is the party’s historical base. Central is the ultimate swing region that tilts the national pendulum.

The just-ended NPP regional executive elections have produced a set of regional chairmen who appear ready to hold these critical regions together. The missing piece now, many party faithful argue, is leadership at the national level that can coordinate, resource, and inspire them to deliver.

That is why the call for Hon. Boakye Agyarko to be elected National Chairman is growing louder. In my view, his election would seal the deal for the NPP heading into 2028.

Why These Three Regions Decide Elections
The numbers do not lie. Ashanti Region consistently delivers the largest vote margin for the NPP. It is the engine room. When turnout is high and the margin is wide, the party starts any national race with a significant advantage.

The Eastern Region is the soul of the NPP. It is where the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition is deepest. It provides both votes and ideological direction. When the Eastern Region is energized, the party’s message travels with authenticity across the country.

The Central Region is different. It is a swing region. It does not belong to any party permanently. It rewards performance, unity, and good organization. Whoever wins Central usually wins Ghana.

In 2016 and 2000, the NPP’s exceptional performance in these three regions carried the party to victory. In 2020 and 2024, any slippage in unity or turnout in these areas made the contest much tighter. The lesson is clear: hold these three, and you hold power.

The New Regional Chairmen: A Foundation for Unity

The NPP has just elected new regional executives. What stands out is that in Ashanti, Eastern, and Central, the party has chosen chairmen with the capacity to manage factions and keep the base together.

This is crucial because internal division has been the biggest threat in these regions, not the NDC. When the NPP is united in Kumasi, Koforidua, and Cape Coast, it is very difficult to beat.

But regional chairmen alone cannot do it. They need a national chairman who understands their terrain, speaks their language, and has the experience to coordinate a national campaign from the top.

Hon. Boakye Agyarko is not a new name in NPP politics. He brings a combination of skills that match exactly what the party needs right now.
