GRIDCo announces power interruption in parts of Accra for emergency transmission works
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has announced a planned power interruption in parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, August 16, 2026, to enable emergency restoration works on the Tema-Achimota 161kV transmission line.
The interruption, scheduled from 3:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., is intended to facilitate the replacement of a damaged transmission tower at Ashaiman.
According to GRIDCo, the tower was damaged when a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being undertaken on its tank within the Right-of-Way (RoW) of the transmission line.
In a statement issued on Saturday, August 15, the company apologised to customers who may be affected by the interruption and appealed for their patience and cooperation while the emergency works are carried out.
GRIDCo said the restoration exercise was necessary to protect the integrity of the transmission line and safeguard both its personnel and the general public.
The company also renewed its warning against encroachment on transmission line Rights-of-Way, stressing that unauthorised occupation and activities within the corridors are prohibited by law.
It cited the Transmission Line Protection Regulations, 1967 (L.I. 542), as amended by L.I. 1737 of 2004, which prohibit activities such as unauthorised construction, excavation, drilling, commercial operations, the establishment of lorry parks, shops and garages, as well as other activities that could compromise the safe operation and maintenance of the transmission network.
GRIDCo further referenced a directive issued by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, requiring individuals and businesses operating within transmission line corridors without authorisation to stop their activities and vacate the affected areas within one month.
The directive covers persons who have erected structures, established businesses, parked heavy-duty vehicles, undertaken welding or excavation activities, or otherwise occupied or obstructed transmission corridors.
GRIDCo warned that once the one-month deadline expires, it will collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, relevant statutory institutions and security agencies to enforce the law and remove unauthorised structures and activities from the affected corridors.
The company urged traditional authorities, landowners, businesses, local authorities and the general public to cooperate in keeping transmission line Rights-of-Way free from encroachment to ensure the safe and reliable operation of Ghana’s national transmission system.
