Agona Duakwa Launches 2026 Akwambo Festival, Chiefs Call for Support for Development Projects
The chiefs and people of Agona Duakwa in the Agona East District of the Central Region have officially launched the 2026 Akwambo Festival, calling on citizens both home and abroad to support ongoing community development projects.
Speaking at the launch, Nana Kweku Mbroh IV, Tufuhene of Agona Duakwa, said the annual Akwambo Festival plays a vital role in educating citizens about the customs, traditions and historical origins of their ancestors who first settled in the town.
He noted that the festival also boosts the local economy and provides an opportunity to showcase the rich culture of Agona Duakwa to the rest of the country and beyond.
Nana Mbroh announced that the 2026 edition will be used to raise funds to continue the construction of a multi‑million‑cedi community centre project, which began two years ago. He appealed to residents to contribute their quota to ensure the project is completed, adding that the implementation committee also requires support to finance other self‑help initiatives aimed at giving Agona Duakwa a facelift.
He further disclosed that the festival committee will explore additional avenues to raise funds for the construction of decent public toilet facilities across various suburbs to promote sanitation and a healthy environment.
The Tufuhene also appealed to political leaders, philanthropists and the Agona East District Assembly to support the chiefs and people financially and materially to complete the projects already initiated.
Festival Will Be Capital Intensive
Nana Kweku Prah I, Nifahene of Agona Duakwa, stressed that organising the festival will be capital intensive. He urged well‑to‑do citizens to participate fully and support the celebration, noting that the chiefs and elders alone cannot shoulder the burden of development.
He said the festival brings joy to the community, especially the youth, and offers an opportunity for them to learn more about their customs and traditions.
Programme Line-Up for 2026 Akwambo Festival
The 2026 Akwambo Festival will commence on Tuesday, 29th September 2026, with worship and praises led by the Local Council of Churches.
Wednesday, 30th September – Thursday, 1st October: Mpintsin drumming and dancing at the Odikro’s palace and other sub‑chiefs’ palaces to commemorate the yam festival and showcase traditional heritage.
Thursday, 1st – Sunday, 4th October: Football games between various family groups in Agona Duakwa.
Monday, 5th October: General cleaning, health walk, candlelight procession and bonfire.
Tuesday, 6th October: Interschool quiz competition and talent night featuring pupils and students from both public and private schools.
Wednesday, 7th October: Youth forum, traditional quiz and old‑school night.
Thursday, 8th October: Float and street carnival.
Friday, 9th October: Akwambo performance by the Asafo company and chiefs, followed by a live band concert.
Saturday, 10th October: Grand durbar of chiefs and people. Political leaders from both government and opposition parties are expected to deliver speeches. The evening will feature an artistes’ night.
Sunday, 11th October: Feasting of stools by chiefs and family heads, followed by a white float to climax the week‑long celebration.
