Abomosu STEM SHS Governing Board Urged to Champion Integrity, Innovation and Excellence

TThe newly inaugurated Governing Board of Abomosu STEM Senior High School has been urged to make integrity, vision, collaboration and accountability the foundation of its leadership as the institution seeks to establish itself as a leading centre for science, technology, engineering and mathematics education in Ghana.

Speaking as Chairman of the occasion at the inauguration of the Board at the school's STEM Assembly Hall on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Mr. Frank Ayim Damptey described the constitution of the Governing Board as an important milestone in strengthening governance and positioning the school for long-term growth.

He commended the Ghana Education Service (GES) for constituting the Board after several years without one, saying the decision demonstrates a renewed commitment to accountability, good governance and institutional excellence.

According to Mr. Damptey, the inauguration should not be viewed merely as a ceremonial exercise but as an investment in the future of the school, its students and Ghana's development.

Quoting an African proverb, "When the roots of a tree are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind," he said the establishment of an effective Governing Board would strengthen the institutional foundations of Abomosu STEM SHS and enable it to withstand future challenges.

He stressed the need for a clear understanding of the respective roles of school management and the Governing Board, noting that while management is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the school, the Board is expected to provide strategic direction, policy oversight and accountability.

He cautioned against viewing the two roles as competing responsibilities, insisting that cooperation between management and the Board would be critical to the school's success.

"Institutions succeed when there are capable guardians. Good governance protects resources, promotes transparency, encourages excellence and ensures that decisions are always made in the best interest of students," he said.

Mr. Damptey congratulated members of the Governing Board on their appointment, describing their selection as recognition of their experience, integrity and commitment to public service.

He reminded them that they represent a broad range of stakeholders, including government, traditional authorities, parents, staff, old students and the wider community, and therefore carry a significant responsibility to safeguard the interests of the school.

He urged the Board to be guided by four principles — Integrity, Vision, Collaboration and Accountability.

According to him, integrity should ensure honesty, transparency and fairness in decision-making, while vision should enable the Board to look beyond immediate challenges and prepare the institution for future opportunities.

Collaboration, he said, would require members to work closely with management, staff and other stakeholders in a spirit of partnership and mutual respect, while accountability should remind them that leadership is a trust and that every decision must ultimately advance the welfare of students and strengthen the institution.

Mr. Damptey also highlighted the strategic importance of Abomosu STEM SHS to Ghana's human capital and technological development.

He noted that STEM education has become an important engine of modern economic development and that students being trained at the school could become Ghana's future engineers, scientists, doctors, architects, software developers, innovators and entrepreneurs.

"For this reason, every classroom built, every laboratory equipped, every teacher motivated and every student inspired is an investment in the future of our country," he stated.

He called on the Headmaster, management and staff of the school to embrace the Governing Board as partners in development, stressing that open communication, mutual respect and a shared commitment to excellence would be essential in achieving the school's objectives.

Parents, old students, traditional authorities and residents of Abomosu were also encouraged to take an active interest in the development of the school.

Mr. Damptey said the responsibility for building a successful institution should not rest on government alone, adding that the community and other stakeholders could contribute through their ideas, resources, expertise and goodwill.

Addressing the students, he encouraged them to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the STEM institution and remain committed to discipline, hard work and integrity.

He reminded them that the school exists to prepare young people to dream boldly, think critically, solve problems and ultimately serve humanity.

"Make good use of the opportunities before you, for the future belongs to those who prepare for it today," he told the students.

Mr. Damptey expressed optimism that the inauguration would mark the beginning of a new era of excellence, innovation, accountability and achievement at Abomosu STEM Senior High School.

He urged the Governing Board to work with wisdom, unity and purpose to help transform the institution into one of Ghana's leading centres of STEM education.

"Great institutions are not built in a day. They are built through consistent leadership, sound governance and the unwavering commitment of people who choose service over self-interest," he said.

The ceremony brought together representatives of the Ghana Education Service, education authorities, traditional leaders, school management, staff, parents, students and other stakeholders.

Mr. Damptey concluded by congratulating the Governing Board and wishing its members wisdom, strength and God's guidance as they undertake the responsibility of helping shape the future of Abomosu STEM Senior High School.
