Ashanti Region: 19-year-old jailed 15 years over mobile phone robbery
A 19-year-old man, Ahmed Mustapha, has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour for robbing a 25-year-old man of his mobile phone at Asabi in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
In a statement issued dated August 12, and signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, the Ashanti Regional Police Command said the convict attacked the victim near the Presbyterian Church at Asabi on July 21, and inflicted cutlass wounds on him.
“The victim sustained cutlass wounds to the forehead, neck and left hand and was subsequently conveyed to the KNUST Hospital for medical treatment," the police said.
According to the Police, the Asokore Mampong Night Patrol Team responded to information about the robbery and found the suspect attempting to escape and hide in an uncompleted building.
He was pursued and arrested, while the victim’s mobile phone and a cutlass suspected to have been used in the attack were retrieved from him.
The victim reportedly regained consciousness after receiving treatment and is in stable condition.
Mustapha was arraigned before the Asokwa Circuit Court Two, presided over by Her Honour Vida Achiaa Yeboah, on July 27.
He pleaded guilty simpliciter to both charges and was remanded in Police custody pending sentencing.
On August 10, the court convicted and sentenced him to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour.
“The convict has since been conveyed to Kumasi Central Prisons to commence his sentence," the police said.
