Hafiz Bin Salih urges NPP delegates to choose leaders based on track record

As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) prepares for its internal elections on Saturday, August 15, 2026, former Upper West and Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Dr Hafiz Bin Salih, has urged delegates to carefully assess the candidates and elect leaders with proven commitment to the party.

In a message to NPP delegates across the country, Dr Bin Salih cautioned members against being swayed solely by attractive campaign promises, stressing that the party’s unity, organisational strength and prospects of returning to power in 2028 would depend largely on the quality of leaders elected at all levels.

He noted that several candidates had made promises in their bid to win the support of delegates but urged members to consider candidates’ experience, conduct and past performance rather than relying on campaign rhetoric.

According to him, the party’s history contains instances where promises made during previous internal elections were not fulfilled after candidates secured victory.

Broken Promises and Their Consequences

Dr Bin Salih cited promises by some candidates to provide motorbikes to party members to support their activities in communities, noting that some of those commitments never materialised.

He also mentioned promises to construct party offices across constituencies and regions, saying some of those pledges were similarly left unfulfilled.

He argued that such broken promises could have consequences beyond individual disappointment, potentially affecting the party’s cohesion and organisational effectiveness.

“When promises are broken, resentment grows and divisions emerge,” he said, warning that such divisions could undermine the party’s ability to work together effectively.

He added that unfulfilled commitments could erode the confidence grassroots members have in their leaders and create frustration among loyal supporters who may feel their contributions are valued only during election periods.

Dr Bin Salih therefore urged delegates to distinguish between genuine commitment and campaign promises, stressing that candidates who genuinely intend to serve the party should demonstrate their commitment through concrete actions.

Delegates Deserve Honesty and Respect

The former Regional Minister described delegates as the backbone of the NPP, noting that they commit their time, resources and energy to maintaining the party’s structures and presence across the country.

He said such members deserved honesty, respect and dignity from candidates seeking their votes.

According to him, leadership should not be about saying whatever is necessary to win votes but should instead be anchored in character, humility, integrity and a genuine willingness to serve.

He encouraged delegates to scrutinise the track records, conduct and commitment of candidates before casting their ballots.

Focus on 2028

Dr Bin Salih said the primary objective of the internal elections should be to build a stronger, united and more effective NPP capable of winning the 2028 general elections.

He cautioned against entrusting the party’s future to individuals whose commitments were limited to campaign periods.

Instead, he called for leaders who would work closely with the grassroots, strengthen party structures and promote unity at all levels.

He urged delegates to draw lessons from past experiences, protect their dignity and make their choices based on demonstrated commitment rather than promises.

“Let us judge candidates by their actions, humility and genuine dedication to our party,” he appealed.

Dr Bin Salih concluded by calling for unity and renewed commitment to the organisational development of the NPP as the party prepares for the 2028 electoral contest.
