GCB denies robbery attempt at Labone Branch after Police shoot two suspects
GCB Bank has denied that its Labone branch in Accra was the target of a robbery attempt, contradicting an earlier announcement by the Ghana Police Service that two suspected robbers were shot during an attempted attack on the bank.
In a statement, the management of GCB said no robbery or attempted robbery occurred at the Labone branch or anywhere on the bank’s premises.
The clarification follows a statement issued by the Police on Thursday, August 13, 2026, claiming that officers had foiled an attempted robbery at the bank.
The Police said two suspects had been shot dead while another was arrested during the incident.
“POLICE FOIL ROBBERY ATTEMPT ON LABONE GCB BANK: ONE SUSPECT ARRESTED, TWO GUNNED DOWN,” the Police stated.
“The Ghana Police Service today 13th August, 2026, foiled a robbery attempt on the GCB Bank, Labone Accra. Two suspects have been gunned down and one has been arrested.”
However, GCB Bank said the incident did not involve any attempted robbery at its facility.
“At no point was the bank breached and customer, member of staff, funds or property of the bank was affected,” the bank’s Public Affairs Department said.
Information gathered from eyewitnesses also suggested that the Police were pursuing the suspects from the direction of the AU Village before the shooting occurred.
GCB Assures Customers
GCB Bank assured customers that the Labone branch remained secure and that normal banking operations could continue.
“The Labone branch remains secure and customers can continue to conduct their banking transactions with confidence,” the statement said.
The bank said it maintained robust security measures across its network and remained in contact with the relevant authorities regarding the incident.
“We wish to reassure all our customers, and stakeholders that GCB Bank remains safe, secure and fully committed to serving them,” the bank stated.
