KMA gives 14-day ultimatum to remove unauthorised canopies in Kumasi

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has directed all shop owners and occupiers in the metropolis to remove unauthorised canopies, awnings, sheds and other structures at the frontage of their shops within 14 days.

In a public notice issued by its Public Relations Unit, KMA said the structures obstruct pedestrian movement, encroach on public spaces and road reserves, impede emergency access, and create environmental and safety hazards.

“You are therefore given fourteen (14) days from the date of this notice to voluntarily remove all unauthorised canopies and associated structures from the frontage of your shops and restore the affected areas to their original condition,” the statement read.

KMA warned that failure to comply will compel the Assembly to remove the offending structures without further notice.

The cost of removal will be borne by the owners or occupiers, and offenders may also face prosecution under physical planning and development control laws.

The Assembly cited the need to ensure a safe, accessible, clean and orderly urban environment and to protect the appearance and orderly development of the Metropolis.
