Birimso Bridge Crash Renews Safety Concerns on Accra–Kumasi Highway

Safety concerns on the Accra–Kumasi N6 Highway have resurfaced following a multi-vehicle crash at Birimso Bridge near Bonsu Junction in the Eastern Region that claimed three lives.

The accident involved four vehicles — a State Transport Company (STC) bus, a fuel tanker, a Mitsubishi pick-up and a Kia Sorento — on one of Ghana’s busiest inter-regional transport corridors.

Following the crash, a video circulated widely on social media in which a man claiming to be an STC driver alleged that only 10 passengers survived and that some passengers aboard the bus had died.

The State Transport Company has rejected the claims, describing them as false and misleading.

Nuru Hamidan, STC’s Deputy Managing Director in charge of Finance and Administration, said all 31 passengers travelling on the company’s bus had been accounted for and that none of the three fatalities was an STC passenger.

According to the company, some passengers sustained minor injuries and received medical attention.

The incident has once again drawn attention to safety conditions on the Accra–Kumasi highway, a critical transport artery connecting the national capital with Kumasi and several communities in the Eastern and Ashanti regions.

The Birimso crash also highlights the dangers of unverified information during emergencies. With social media increasingly becoming a major source of breaking news, inaccurate casualty figures can quickly spread, causing unnecessary anxiety among families and the public.

Beyond correcting misinformation surrounding the accident, the latest tragedy renews calls for stronger road-safety measures, improved traffic management and sustained investment in the Accra–Kumasi corridor.

For the thousands of motorists and passengers who depend on the highway daily, ensuring a safer and more reliable journey remains an urgent national priority.
