Government plans second National Theatre in Kumasi – Gomashie
The government is planning to establish a second National Theatre in Kumasi as part of efforts to expand Ghana’s cultural and creative arts infrastructure, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has announced.
Ms Gomashie, however, said the immediate priority would be to complete an existing theatre and cultural centre project in the Ashanti Region before embarking on the construction of a new facility.
Speaking during the Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, 2026, the Minister said the proposed facility would complement the existing National Theatre in Accra.
“We plan to build a second National Theatre in Kumasi,” she said.
According to Ms Gomashie, she recently toured theatre facilities and Centres for National Culture in the Ashanti Region and subsequently proposed to Cabinet that the government focus on completing a project that had already been started.
She said Cabinet had approved the proposal, paving the way for work on the existing facility to resume and be completed.
“I took a tour of the Ashanti Region's theatre and Centre for National Culture spaces. I have suggested to Cabinet that instead of starting a new one, we focus on finishing what has been started,” she said.
She explained that the decision was intended to ensure that government resources were used efficiently by completing existing infrastructure before committing funds to a new project.
“And Cabinet is in approval of that suggestion. So that is what is going to happen, and if the opportunity comes, we start a new one,” she added.
The Minister also disclosed plans to rehabilitate the existing National Theatre in Accra as part of efforts to improve the country’s cultural infrastructure.
The proposed Kumasi National Theatre is expected to expand access to major performing arts facilities in the Ashanti Region and create additional space for cultural activities and creative productions.
