Hopeson Adorye given 48 hours to retract claim linking Ekow Ekow Assafuah to Ghana Today or be sued
Lawyers for the Member of Parliament for Tafo, Ekow Vincent Assafuah, have demanded a retraction of a Facebook publication made by former New Patriotic Party parliamentary candidate Hopeson Adorye linking their client to the Ghana Today podcast.
In a letter dated August 9, Kulendi@Law, solicitors for Assafuah, said Adorye had on August 8 reproduced a Ghana Today post on Facebook and described Assafuah as the “originator” of the podcast.
The lawyers said the statement created the impression that Assafuah owned, controlled, operated or was responsible for the platform and the publication in question.
The lawyers, led by Stephen Nsiah Opoku, said their client had categorically denied any ownership, authorship, control or involvement in Ghana Today or the publication shared by Adorye.
“Our Client has instructed us to state unequivocally that he is neither the owner nor the originator of Ghana Today podcast, and had no authorship, control, responsibility or involvement whatsoever in the publication which you reproduced,” the lawyers said.
They argued that Adorye’s publication, when read in its full context, was capable of exposing Ekow Assafuah to public ridicule, criticism, hostility and reputational harm.
The lawyers further pointed to Adorye’s statement that “I will surely respond in equal measure”, saying it reinforced the impression that Assafuah was responsible for the publication and should be held accountable for it.
Kulendi@Law has therefore demanded that Adorye pull down the alleged false attribution and publish an unqualified apology to Assafuah on the same Facebook platform.
The lawyers gave him 48 hours from the receipt of the letter to comply with the demand.
They cautioned that failure, refusal or neglect to comply within the stipulated period would compel their client to pursue “all appropriate legal remedies” without further notice.
