Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reveals the driving force of her partnership with Mahama
Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says her working relationship with President John Dramani Mahama has been built on mutual trust, shared objectives and a common commitment to implementing the government’s development agenda.
According to her, there is little room for fundamental disagreements between the two leaders because they are guided by the same manifesto commitments presented to Ghanaians during the election campaign.
“What are we doing together? That’s a fundamental question. We are here because we have a manifesto. We did the campaign. The people of Ghana listened to us. They were very merciful to us,” she said.
Speaking on the KSM Show on Friday, August 7, 2026, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government’s priority was to deliver on its mandate and address the needs of Ghanaians rather than create unnecessary tensions within its leadership.
“We have a strategy. So what is there to fundamentally disagree about? To begin with, the issue is we are building the nation,” she said.
She acknowledged the immense responsibilities and pressures that come with the presidency, saying her role as Vice President was largely to support the President as he leads the country.
“He will see more than we would see. He’ll face more pressures than we would. So you try to defer as much as you can,” she explained.
The Vice President said her confidence in President Mahama was rooted in her knowledge of his character and her belief that his decisions would remain consistent with the objectives agreed upon by the government.
“You know that he’s not going to do anything away from the agreed objectives. You know him enough, you trust him enough, and he demonstrates that enough,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed that her responsibility was therefore to support the President in the discharge of his duties.
“So my job is to support him. He’s not going to ask you to go and jump into the sea or anything like that,” she added.
She described her relationship with President Mahama as positive and expressed gratitude for the cooperation and trust that have characterised their work together.
“So far, so good. And I’m very, very thankful. I’m very, very thankful that we have such a good working relationship,” she said.
