Dr Henry Nana Benyin Enninful elected NPP Germany chairman with decisive victory

Dr Henry Nana Benyin Enninful has been elected Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Germany Branch after defeating incumbent Chairman Dr Felix Yamoah in a decisive victory that signals a generational change in the leadership of the party’s external branch.

Dr Enninful secured 276 votes, representing 68 per cent of the 406 ballots cast at the Hamburg and Saarbrücken voting centres. Dr Yamoah polled 127 votes, representing 31.3 per cent, while three ballots were rejected.

The result gave Dr Enninful a commanding 149-vote margin, with the newly elected chairman receiving more than twice the votes obtained by his predecessor.

His victory concludes a campaign centred on organisational renewal, accountability, youth participation, policy, and efforts to reposition NPP Germany as a stronger and more influential external branch.

Victory must translate into NPP return to power

In his victory speech, Dr Enninful quickly shifted the focus from his personal achievement to what he described as the broader political objective of strengthening the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He said his election would ultimately be meaningless unless it contributed to an NPP victory in 2028 and the election of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as President of Ghana.

The new chairman also pledged to work with all members, regardless of who they supported during the internal elections, to unite the branch, strengthen its chapters and increase participation.

For him, the conclusion of the internal contest should mark the beginning of a renewed effort to mobilise members and redirect the branch’s energies towards helping the NPP regain political power.

A generational change in NPP Germany
Dr Enninful’s election represents a significant generational transition within the Germany Branch.

A scientist, academic, engineer and long-serving party organiser, he has risen through various levels of the NPP, from grassroots polling-station activities in Ghana to youth organisation, chapter leadership, branch executive responsibilities and now the chairmanship.

His supporters presented his youthfulness as an advantage that could be combined with professional expertise, organisational experience and a long record of service to the party.

His political journey spans more than a decade. Between 2010 and 2014, he served as Polling Station Secretary at Orion Cinema in the Okaikoi South Constituency.

After relocating to Europe, he remained active in the NPP and served as Communications Officer of the NPP Germany Branch Youth Wing from 2018 to 2022.

He became Chairman of the Leipzig Chapter in 2020 and has also served on the NPP Germany Branch Communications Team since the same year.

In 2022, he was elected Organizer of the NPP Germany Branch, a position from which he launched his successful campaign for the chairmanship.

His other party engagements include serving as Patron of NPP Europe Loyal Ladies, Patron of Alpha Patriots, a member of Professionals for Change since 2017 and a member of the NPP Finance Committee from 2026.

Academic and professional background
Beyond politics, Dr Enninful has built an academic and professional career spanning Ghana, Italy and Germany.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, an MSc in Petroleum Engineering from the Politecnico di Torino in Italy and a PhD in Physics from Leipzig University in Germany.

He has also undertaken further training in Higher Education at Harvard University and in Data Science and Business Innovation in Hamburg.

Since 2018, he has worked as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Materials Science and Data Science at Leipzig University.

Prior to that, he worked as a Field Engineer with Schlumberger SEACO Inc. in Takoradi in 2014.

His scientific career has also earned international recognition, including the Walter Benjamin Fellowship of the German Research Foundation.

Manifesto campaign built around 5Rs
A major feature of Dr Enninful’s campaign was the formal launch of a manifesto ahead of the election, an approach described as unusual for an NPP external-branch executive contest.

The manifesto was launched on August 4, 2026, under the theme, “Honouring Our Tradition, Shaping Our Future.”

The event was chaired by Mary Eileen Porsch-Oduro, a member of the NPP Council of Elders, while special guests included former Central Regional Minister Justina Marigold Assan, former First Vice Chairman of the NPP in the Central Region Ekow Ewusi, and former Chief Executive Officer of the State Housing Company Kwabena Ampofo Appiah.

At the centre of the manifesto is the 5Rs agenda — Revival, Rebranding, Repositioning, Redirection and Recognition.

Under the Revival component, Dr Enninful pledged to rebuild inactive and weakening chapters, reconnect with disillusioned members and promote year-round participation rather than mobilisation centred primarily on internal elections.

His flagship Operation 500 Active Members initiative seeks to build a branch whose members remain actively engaged throughout the year.

He also proposed supporting chapters to formalise and register their organisations within their respective German states to enable them to explore legitimate funding, sponsorship and programme opportunities.

Dues waiver for long-serving members
One of the distinctive proposals in the manifesto is a dues waiver for senior members.

Under the proposal, members aged 65 and above who have belonged to the branch for at least 10 years would no longer be required to pay dues.

Dr Enninful described such members as pioneers, mentors, pacesetters and custodians of the branch’s values whose contributions deserved recognition.

The proposal is also intended to encourage continued participation and demonstrate to younger members that long-term service to the party is valued.

Business Council to support investment

Dr Enninful has also proposed establishing an NPP Germany Business Council to support members interested in investing in Ghana.

The proposed council would provide a platform for members to develop business ideas, connect with relevant networks and institutions, and prepare viable ventures for investment.

He has argued that members with credible investment proposals should be positioned to benefit from legitimate government investment opportunities when the NPP returns to power.

The proposal forms part of his broader vision of making membership of NPP Germany a source of practical networks, opportunities and empowerment.

Building a stronger NPP Germany
Under the Recognition component of his manifesto, Dr Enninful has argued that the success of the branch should not be measured solely by membership figures or the achievements of its chairman.

Instead, he has proposed assessing how many members have been recognised and supported in pursuing their legitimate political objectives within the party.

He has also pledged to use his networks and relationships in Ghana to support members and transform NPP Germany into what he has described as a “real and not a paper tiger.”

The new administration is also expected to oversee activities marking the 35th anniversary of NPP Germany, including efforts to honour pioneers, founders, former executives and long-serving members.

It also plans to document the branch’s history by compiling photographs, records, documents, milestones and accounts from past and present members.

Rebranding and repositioning the branch

Dr Enninful’s Rebranding agenda focuses on improving the image, communication and visibility of NPP Germany while rebuilding pride among members.

His Repositioning strategy seeks to establish the branch as an external branch of choice, “enviable to all and comparable to none.”

The Redirection component of his programme is focused on restoring the branch’s political purpose and strengthening its contribution to the NPP’s electoral fortunes in Ghana.

That objective featured prominently in his victory speech, where he linked the significance of his election to the party’s prospects in the 2028 general elections.

From campaign slogan to leadership test

Throughout his campaign, Dr Enninful used the slogan “Mo kasaa, mete”, expressing his commitment to listening to members.

Following his decisive victory, the slogan will now face the test of implementation as he assumes responsibility for leading the branch.

With a strong electoral mandate, expectations are high that he will consult widely, unite members across the various factions that emerged during the campaign and begin implementing the programme presented to delegates.

His pledge to work with everyone after the elections signals an early effort to move the branch beyond internal campaign divisions.

For Dr Enninful, however, the 276 votes and 149-vote margin are only the beginning.

His ultimate measure of success will be whether NPP Germany becomes more united, active and influential and contributes meaningfully to the NPP’s bid to return to government in 2028 with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as President.
