STMA distributes poultry birds under Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme
Residents of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis have begun receiving poultry birds under the government's flagship Nkoko Nkitinkiti Programme.
The programme forms part of the government's commitment to boost local poultry production, reduce the country's dependence on imported poultry products and create jobs for the youth.
Mr Frederick F. Faidoo, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), said the programme was part of the government's vision to build a food-secure, self-reliant and prosperous Ghana through strategic investments in agriculture.
He said the programme demonstrated the government's commitment to bringing poultry production directly into homes and communities while creating jobs and improving beneficiaries' livelihoods.
Mr Faidoo said by supporting backyard poultry production with quality chicks, feed and technical assistance, the government was empowering Ghanaians to become active participants in national development while reducing dependence on imported poultry products.
He urged beneficiaries to treat the birds as valuable business assets and follow guidance from agricultural extension officers to maintain good poultry management practices.
“If managed well, this support will not only improve household nutrition but also generate sustainable income and create employment opportunities for others,” he noted.
The MCE assured that the Assembly would collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Programme became a lasting success for the metropolis and the nation as a whole.
Madam Deborah Gyasi Frimpomaa, Sekondi-Takoradi Metro Director of Agriculture, said the distribution was being undertaken across the three constituencies under the Assembly, with beneficiaries in Takoradi being the first to receive the birds.
She said preparations were underway to distribute the poultry birds to beneficiaries in the Sekondi and Essikado-Ketan constituencies, adding that the Department of Agriculture and Veterinary Services would provide technical advice to ensure the success of the initiative.
Mr Thomas Cudjoe, a beneficiary, expressed gratitude to the government for the intervention and said beneficiaries would work to make Takoradi a model for successful poultry production and local economic development.
