'I have never ruled any position out' Asiedu Nketia keeps 2028 presidential ambition alive

National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the veteran party strategist popularly known as "General Mosquito," has once again declined to rule out a bid for Ghana's presidency, telling a national television audience that ambition is a natural and necessary part of politics remarks that have reignited speculation about his intentions ahead of the NDC's 2028 flagbearer contest.

"You cannot hide your ambition"
Speaking on JoyNews' PM Express, the 69-year-old NDC chairman said politicians who lack ambition are in the wrong profession, but stressed that timing and manner matter just as much as the ambition itself. "Ambition is a very useful thing in politics. If you are a politician and you have no ambition, you are in the wrong profession," he said, adding that he would "clearly declare" his intentions "when the time is up" for him to do so. Asked directly about his political future, he insisted he had "never ruled any position out," keeping the door firmly open rather than either confirming or denying a presidential run.

A tour that fuelled the speculation
The renewed scrutiny follows a nationwide "Thank You Tour" that Asiedu Nketia has been conducting since around April 2025, including a three-day swing through 16 constituencies in the Eastern Region in September 2025. Critics within the party and sources close to the presidency have characterized the tour as calculated early positioning for the 2028 race, given that President Mahama, having already served two terms non-consecutively and having ruled out a third-term bid, will be constitutionally barred from running again in 2028. Majority Chief Whip Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor has pushed back on that reading, arguing the tour predates the speculation and forms part of the party's routine post-election engagement strategy rather than a covert campaign launch, and challenging critics to point to any statement in which Asiedu Nketia explicitly declared a flag bearer ambition.

Asiedu Nketia himself addressed the speculation directly in comments to Channel 1 Media, arguing it was too early for such conversations while the government was less than a year into its term. "If we get to the bridge, we will cross it," he said, framing the priority as ensuring the Mahama administration succeeds rather than jockeying for succession.

The "presidential look" debate
Beyond questions of timing, some commentary on Asiedu Nketia's prospects has focused on optics rather than substance. Legal practitioner and political commentator Martin Kpebu, discussing the chairman's presidential prospects on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, argued that Asiedu Nketia's biggest hurdle is not competence or political experience where Kpebu says he commands broad support within the party but public perceptions about his physical appearance, a concern he said had reportedly been raised in the past by the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

A three-decade political career
Asiedu Nketia's standing within the NDC rests on more than three decades of party service. Born on December 24, 1956, in Seikwa in the Bono Region, he entered politics in 1989 as an elected representative to the first Wenchi District Assembly and went on to serve 12 years as Member of Parliament for Wenchi West. He was Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture from 1997 to 2001, and was first elected NDC General Secretary in 2005 with nearly 80 per cent of the vote, before being re-elected in 2010 with 93 per cent support a mandate that cemented his reputation as one of the party's most formidable internal organizers. He has also played a historically pivotal role in NDC succession politics, including convening the National Executive Committee meeting that endorsed Mahama as the party's presidential candidate following the death of President John Evans Atta Mills in 2012.

Separately, distancing from a Mahama third term
Asiedu Nketia has also moved recently to shut down a related but distinct debate — calls in some quarters for President Mahama to pursue a third term. He argued that presidential term limits deserve broader national debate on their own merits rather than being tied to Mahama specifically, noting the President "has publicly said he is not interested and would want to serve his term and exit." That distancing suggests Asiedu Nketia is positioning himself as a defender of constitutional term limits even as he keeps his own political options open for after Mahama's tenure ends.
