George Washington Carver was not born with a silver spoon. He was born into slavery. He started life with nothing: no money, no name, no guarantees for a better future.

The “Marks” We Need In Ghana Today

In Education: Rote learning has done more harm than good. We must train students to think outside the box, to identify problems and solve them. They must be producers, not just consumers.

In Business: Profit should not be the only reason for business. We must leave behind systems, jobs, ethics and integrity.

In Politics: Government exists to create prosperity and equal opportunity. Policies must benefit the people. Leave behind roads, schools, hospitals, and institutions that outlast you.

In Family: Care must go beyond providing basics. Families must leave values, character, and peace in the home.

In Community: Let’s go back to communal labour. Desilt the drains before the rains come. Plant trees. Teach the young ones values and skills to prepare them for a successful life. That is a mark.

The Cost of Leaving No Mark:
For the Individual: Regret. A life full of “I wish I had.”

For the Community: Perennial problems because leadership failed. No one solved it.

For the Nation: A generation that inherited but did not build. We become tenants in our own country.

The Way Forward: How to Leave a Mark

Decide Your Purpose: Know your major definite purpose and live it. Use your talents to impact your generation and those to come.

Solve a Problem: Find a problem and solve it. That’s a mark.

Start Where You Are: Carver had no laboratory. He had soil. Use what you have.

Educate Yourself, Then Serve: Carver’s aim was to help the farmer. Service creates legacy. Fame fades.

Duplicate Yourself: If you’re a teacher, make another teacher. A mark multiplies through mentorship. Write. Record. Put your thoughts on paper and get people walking with you.

Think Long-Term: Build things that will outlive you. That is lasting legacy.

Work Hard: Dream big and translate ideas into reality.

Remember: Marks and monuments are different. Monuments can be pulled down. Marks cannot.
