Heavy security deployed to Laboma Beach ahead of demolition exercise
Heavy security presence has been deployed at Laboma Beach in Accra ahead of a major demolition exercise aimed at tackling persistent flooding in parts of the capital.
The operation, being coordinated by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), forms part of broader efforts by authorities to address the causes of recurring floods and improve drainage within flood-prone communities.
Police and military personnel were stationed at various points around the beach on Friday, restricting access to portions of the area as preparations for the exercise got underway.
The demolition is expected to focus on unauthorised structures erected within the enclave, which authorities say obstruct natural drainage channels and increase the risk of flooding, particularly during the peak of the rainy season.
The exercise follows a series of interventions undertaken after the devastating June 29 floods, including large-scale clean-up operations, desilting of drains and the demolition of structures identified as obstructing waterways.
Authorities have consistently maintained that the indiscriminate development of wetlands, waterways and other unauthorised locations remains one of the major causes of flooding in Accra. They have warned that enforcement operations will continue in affected areas to ensure compliance with planning and environmental regulations.
REGSEC has reiterated that the demolition exercise is intended to protect lives and property by restoring natural drainage systems and preventing future flood disasters across the Greater Accra Region.
