Eighteen injured in road crash on Tema–Akosombo Highway
Eighteen people have sustained injuries in a road traffic accident involving a passenger bus at Adele-Kpoe on the Tema–Akosombo Highway.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, August 5, after a Mercedes-Benz bus travelling from northern Ghana to Ashaiman reportedly suffered a front tyre burst.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said firefighters from the Kpong Fire Station responded swiftly to a distress call and rescued a passenger trapped in the wreckage.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 6, the GNFS said all the injured victims were transported to the Akuse Government Hospital for medical treatment following the rescue operation.
"On arrival, firefighters found a Mercedes-Benz bus (AS 427-09), travelling from northern Ghana to Ashaiman, had suffered a front tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle veered off the road and somersaulted," the GNFS said in the statement.
The Service said the impact of the crash left one occupant trapped inside the vehicle.
Firefighters carried out a rescue operation to free the trapped victim before emergency responders evacuated all the casualties to the hospital.
"Firefighters successfully rescued the trapped occupant before all casualties were conveyed to the Akuse Government Hospital for medical treatment," the statement added.
The GNFS has not provided further details on the condition of the injured victims but urged motorists to prioritise vehicle maintenance and exercise caution on the roads to help prevent similar accidents.
