Two Beninese women found dead in Tamale hotel room as IGP deploys special investigative team

The Northern Regional Police Command has launched investigations into the deaths of two women, believed to be nationals of Benin, whose bodies were discovered in a room at the Cab Hospitality Hotel in the Gbewa Residential Area of Tamale. The case, still in its early stages, has already drawn a significant escalation in police resources, with the Inspector-General of Police deploying a special team of investigators, intelligence officers and crime scene experts from National Police Headquarters to support the regional command's probe.

How the bodies were discovered
According to a statement issued by the Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, on Tuesday, August 4, the bodies were found on Monday, August 3, 2026, after hotel management alerted the police. Officers who responded to the scene discovered the two women deceased inside the room. The remains have since been conveyed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital Mortuary, where they will undergo preservation and a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

An identity still to be confirmed
Police say the deceased are believed to be Beninois nationals, though formal identification has not yet been completed. Investigators are working to establish the women's identities with certainty and to liaise with the relevant authorities likely including Beninese diplomatic representatives in Ghana to trace and notify their families. Nothing about the circumstances that led to their deaths, including whether foul play is suspected, has been disclosed by police at this stage; the cause of death remains formally undetermined pending the post-mortem results.

A significant deployment for an unresolved case
The scale of the police response is notable. The dispatch of a specialized National Headquarters team investigators, intelligence officers and a crime scene unit to support a regional command signals that authorities are treating the case with considerable seriousness, even before the post-mortem findings are known.
