Civil servants embark on clean-up exercise to promote environmental sanitation

Civil servants have embarked on a clean-up exercise at the Ministerial Enclave in Accra as part of activities marking the 2026 Civil Service Week Celebration and the 2025 Civil Service Awards Ceremony, reaffirming the Civil Service’s commitment to promoting environmental sanitation, public health and responsible public service.

The exercise held on Thursday brought together staff from various Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), who swept streets, desilted drains, cleared overgrown weeds and collected refuse to improve the cleanliness of the enclave.

The initiative forms part of the annual Civil Service Week activities aimed at promoting teamwork, civic responsibility and a healthy working environment, while encouraging public servants to lead by example in maintaining clean surroundings.

Speaking during the exercise, the Chief Director of the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Office, Ms. Suweibatu Adam, urged civil servants to make cleanliness a continuous responsibility rather than a one-day event.

She stressed that maintaining clean workplaces enhances productivity, safeguards public health and creates a more conducive environment for both workers and members of the public.

Ms. Adam also expressed appreciation to the participating institutions and corporate partners for their support in ensuring the success of the exercise.

The Chief Director of the Ministry of the Interior, Mrs. Doreen Annan, commended staff for their dedication and unwavering support during the annual Civil Service Week celebrations.

She encouraged all civil servants to actively participate in the remaining activities scheduled for the week, including a thanksgiving service, policy fair and exhibition, public lectures, a food competition and other indoor games.

Also addressing participants, the Acting Director in charge of Sanitation at the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr. Akwetey Sampson, underscored the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a clean, safe and healthy working environment.

He urged staff to remain committed to environmental cleanliness beyond the celebration, noting that sustained sanitation practices contribute significantly to improved public health and national development.

The 2026 Civil Service Week Celebration, organised by the Office of the Head of Civil Service, is on the theme: “The Resetting Agenda for Sustainable Development in Ghana: The Civil Service’s Responsibility.”
